I didn’t get that, I thought he was more engaged with the earlier cars - clearly the ones that inspired him as a young man.
Me either, the interview with the guy who looked after them for him in Motorsport said he regularly showed them off to friends and business associates, picking particular examples he wanted to show off and manoeuvring them front and centre-only for them to be moved back once done (in exactly the place they came from).

Bernie, for all his faults, was a true enthusiast.
was..?

Has something happened? :/

It would be interesting to know what was paid, but I don't suppose we'll get to find out. Amazing collection.

Old family friend..... scratchchin

"If you want to buy my cars it will be $650 million,"

"Nope, I'll give you $400 million,"

"Ok then, I'll give them to Tom Hartley and he can sell them all one by one,"

A few Youtube videos later....

"Ok I'll give you $500 million,"

"Done"

Ring, ring,

"Hi Tom, sorry to have mucked you around but I have sold all those cars to Mr Red Bull. Here's a million quid to show my appreciation, Bye"

It's a shame they're all just going to move from one billionaire's secret lair to another, rather than dispersed among multiple collectors where at least a few of them would get used occasionally.

Once a used car dealer, always a used car dealer lol.
I went to Caledonian Road nick, since closed, but in those days a Regional Crime Squad had offices there. If you were a uniform PC, it was best to go there mob-handed.

They had an old old-time collator there and I'd asked for advice on a bloke I was going to interview. He was extremely helpful and we got chatting about F1. I asked if Ecclestone had his second-hand car dealership on Cally Road ground.

"He was never a second-hand car dealer. Sold a few motorbikes, some bicycles, but more of a general second-hand dealer on mechanical things. Lawnmowers, that sort of stuff."

He used to be foot patrol at the time of Ecclestone and mentioned one or two 'names' who used to frequent the place. I asked him about the Great Train Robbery. Came up with some info - nothing shocking. He reckoned he was completely obnoxious to everyone not at the elevated status of a shop owner.

"Thought a lot of himself, and liked to tell everyone how important he was."

He didn't like the bloke it appeared.

Having worked for a company owned by him in the dim and distant past, he was a very odd individual, very particular about some things, not others, he owned so much stuff it was hard to keep track of, but now and then the F1 cars were started and moved around, I would guess he has others that are perhaps more personal to him and his family he would never sell.

From the article:
Mateschitz paid an undisclosed sum to seal the deal that will see the collection put on public display in the future.

“I am very pleased that Bernie has placed his trust in me to take care of this historically significant collection,” Mateschitz said.

“It will be carefully preserved, expanded over the years, and in the near future it will be made accessible to the public at an appropriate location.”

That's the way I saw it when the news broke.
I guess there's only a handful of people with the resources to buy such a large and expensive collection all in one go. That way Bernie gets his money now rather than waiting for TH jr to sell them individually, although quite what he's going to do with it now at his age is beyond me.

It's not about the money, it's about dealing with this now while he is still around to make things easier for his wife when he hangs his clogs up.

I just hope he does not intend to rebrand them in Red Bull colours

There should be a law against that.
