Look at the contrast to the impact made by Hamilton in his rookie season against Piasri's start in F1. Lewis had to deal with a peak Alonso, the double WDC and vanquisher of Michael Schumacher. He showed up in F1 and was immediately on that level, and he ended up ahead at the end of the season. What's more, without some bizarre occurrences towards the end (in particular, being left out on tyres on the canvas in China and the unaccountable gearbox glitch in Brazil), he would have ended up ahead of Alonso by a huge margin.
I just don't see anything similar from Piastri. He came up against a still quite new Norris and was usually slower. I rate Osacr highly, but I don't see an all-time great Hamilton/Senna level of talent. I'm happy to be proven wrong if that's what happens.

We'd see much better race performances from new drivers if tyre thermal management wasn't such a big part of the game. This is something I really wish the sport could sort out.
I’m not sure these two comments are unrelated. The tyre management stuff is impossible to learn outside actually driving the car at an event or the very few official testing sessions, yet is a key part of maximising car performance.
In other words, I’m not sure we’ll ever see a rookie come up in the same way as Lewis did in 2007. Yes there’s a book to be written on why he was left out on the canvas in China, he’s already said as much. A very political season for the team, let’s say.
If Piastri can sort out his duff circuits it will be interesting to see the gap closing. Lando has had him covered in the last two seasons and I don't feel that will change hugely. But I want it to!!
And yes, the tyre management is a huge leveler in terms of drivers maximising race performance. All drivers have to learn it, as like it or not it is part of F1 at the moment. I think Clark and Prost would have excelled.

I agree- look at Azerbaijan 2024 for how good Piastri can be, he’s top level and my tip for the win this weekend. I like his level headed outlook, that he makes next to no mistakes and is a natural team leader. He’s on his way to the top.And yes, the tyre management is a huge leveler in terms of drivers maximising race performance. What would we class as a very good result for LH this opening weekend?
I'd suggest Top 5 in Quali &/or the race itself?
Not expecting him to out qualify CLC but hoping he can maybe match him/beat him over the course of the race. I'd suggest Top 5 in Quali &/or the race itself?
Yes top 5 would be my bar for a decent first outing.

“2025 F1 Support Races Thread”
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
For those new to the forum, please keep discussion of support races to that thread rather than this one, as there’s quite a few PHers who catch up on the comings and goings of F2, FIA F3, F1 Academy, and others, at a time of their choosing.
The support races thread will be one thread that runs for the whole season.

I think Norris will do a Button, just about snatch the WDC after a few serious fumbles from the rest, (and himself).
Possibly harsh on Button; Red Bull were as fast as Brawn by round 3 in China and - double diffuser aside - the RB was a far better car concept. It'll be interesting to see how the season progresses. Over the last 3 years McLaren's in-season development has been pretty stellar but they've started with at best an average car. This year it looks like they'll start with a stronger car, and all the teams will be focusing on 2026 as soon as they can. In contrast 2009 was the first year of new rules so there was lots of development potential that Brawn couldn't afford, and they were left far behind.
I suspect that - flexi wings aside - whoever starts strongest will take the title if there's clear water between the teams. The fly in the ointment is that Piastri will be allowed to take points off Norris, whereas Lawson will probably be expected to fall in behind Verstappen. If the gap is small between McLaren and RB it'll be another title for Max. That becomes even more likely if Ferrari are in the mix.
You'd hope that McLaren have learnt their lesson from last year and had a good long look at their strategy of fairness to both drivers, and are more decisive in backing one of them sooner this year if they're in a fight with a driver from another team. Having one unhappy driver is preferable to having two unhappy drivers.

Mine had been the same forever which almost certainty was not a good move!

The resposts come from when you hit “Submit” and then close your phone on that screen, your phone browser refreshes itself next time you open it and posts again. Mine had been the same forever which almost certainty was not a good move!
The data breach isn’t specifically related to PH, it’s a general warning that you have a common password which has appeared in data breaches elsewhere.
Yes it’s always good practice to change passwords regularly, most browsers will now let you generate a random string which you can save.

Starting to see photos of the cars.
This is why McLaren were hiding their brake ducts during the Bahrain test.

Thank you very much for that, I had a panic there! The data breach isn’t specifically related to PH, it’s a general warning that you have a common password which has appeared in data breaches elsewhere.
