Ford Fiesta or Mazda 2
Discussion
Look at the price of a Mazda2 and then look at the Fiesta in the same/similar spec - The Ford is way more expensive, and the residuals on the Mazda are also better, so overall makes teh Mazda cheaper to own
I've posted on here before about my Mums Mazda2 Sport - It's a really good drive, really well spec'd and in the two years or so she's had it now, the only visits to the dealer have been for suprisingly cheap (for a main dealer)services.

Which Fiesta are we talking?
I drive a Fiesta zetec s, its not a bad car at all, reasonably cheap to insure (I'm 20 and pay just over £500). However servicing is quite expensive, I just paid £304 for mine.
I get around 45 mpg, which includes normal driving, and then the occasional spirited drive. It certaintly isn't the fastest car ever, but handles pretty well.
