I know someone who has run older XJ's for many years but he's proper "old money" wealthy - ie he hasn't actually got any money, it's all tied up in property etc. I daresay he could buy a new one if he wanted to, but he can't justify the capital expenditure.

Who else is going to buy one? If you're the sort of person who might spend £40K on a new 5 series, for example, then you're unlikely to be interested in taking on a 2yr old XJ.
