Best Modern Classic Car
Discussion
Iconic means many different things to different people and budgets are relevant but on a "realistic" budget, my candidates would be:-
Mercedes W124 E500
E39 M5
Lotus Carlton
Audi Quattro
Lancia Integrale
I like the combination of 4 door useability mated to supercar performance for its day but probably just my genarational kind of thing.
Wish I could do pictures.....

Not sure I agree, I find the Porsche line just too unimaginiative and inspired to be capable of being a classic. In other news, with your rare name and location do you know the town Mossley by any chance?
Am afraid not! Am in Whitestake. With regards to your initial point - define classic. My Dad just bought a 1998 £600 Rover 114 GSi with nominal mileage - to many, that already has classic tendencies. He has made it better then brand new already. Spyder is special even by Porsche standards, approx 230 sold in UK, last one built last July.

So.......if you wanted to invest in the best looking, most iconic classic sports car, with the most modern running gear, suspension, brakes, engine etc........what would you go for? And by the way, I'm excluding the Eagle Speedster on grounds of extortionate cost.
Bit vague, are you asking about classics re-worked with modern running gear, etc. or current cars which will be future classics? Or older cars which will be/are becoming classics, which had 'modern'/ahead of their time mechanicals/tech?I think every car that is 20 years old or more (i.e. classic territory) does ask the driver to make certain compromises versus new stuff, it isn't all about it being more rewarding, its things like doing without air con, steering wheel controls for the stereo, fiddly single din stereo, no ESP, no ABS, reduced safety, generally being rattlier and older, rust, oil leaks etc etc.
It is funny what you do miss from modern cars, it isn't always a win/win going older but no depreciation, classic insurance, freedom from the highest road tax groups, having a more interesting car and the aforementioned involvement do help.
