My dads friend bought one of these for the sole reason his Astra roof bars would fit!
Didn't a PHer have one as a sleeper with a big V8 or something?

They misread the memo from all the other sportscar makers using mirrors from the CX hehehttps://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16...

These weren’t strictly factory. They were built as a normal hatch and then had the roof cut off.

I found a set of instructions when I was emptying a drawer at work one day. IIRC the mods were done by HSV in Australia.

There was a time 25-30 years ago where almost every mainstream hatchback maker offered a cabrio of some sort.

What changed?

For us target market 30 - 40 somethings, "Ghia" was the trim level of your dad's boss's Cortina. It's lost the polish. The Vignale concept is far too contrived and twee - either give us a proper top end trim level like "Titanium X Sport Spunk Fest" with every toy in the book which you can tell apart from the rest of the range, or set up a separate luxury brand like Lexus or Infiniti. This halfway house is neither here nor there. You still have to push past the Fiesta's and Ka's to get to it in the showroom, and still tell your neighbours you drive a Ford.
Ford must own a host of names they could ressurect.

Interestingly, the Australian ones were converted in Australia by HSV. The European Opel Corsa Twister was done in Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Barina

Cars are much more expensive now to design and build, competition has never been more fierce, just look at all the collaboration now between different makes who share platforms, engines etc. to keep costs down, producing a cabriolet which is a very low seller just costs too much and isn't worth it to the manufactures.

Not that long ago we had Renault Megane CC (best seller in Europe I believe) Peugeot 308 CC, Astra TwinTop, Ford Focus CC, VW Golf cabriolet, VW EOS, now none of those exists and there are no plans to have replacements.

Ok there is the Vauxhall Cascade, however how many do you see!

It had a pair of C20LETs in it. Mental.

Thread here, but the images have died.

the mondeo vignale... i mean i knew it existed but who the fk is going to buy one?? Never seen one on the road. Would make a fantastic used purchase if any 'ex head office' cars are about anywhere in the coming years.
I see quite a few and I don't think Ford's head office is around here.

There was a 67 plate one outside Sainsbury's the other day. Really nice looking car.

High spec Fords and Vauxhalls seem to be very popular in nice parts of the West Midlands and I don't know exactly why. Granada Scorpios and Carlton Diamonds and Omega Elites have been replaced by high spec Mondeos and Insignias.

Speaking of 4 wheel drive Mercs I'd never heard of while in the UK, on the continent they got a 1st gen ML500. I believe ours stopped at ML430 before the AMG ones

We also get a V8 diesel, ML400, which looks like fun but can generate utterly terrifying bills if (when) it goes wrong. I think a few of them end up stripped to provide replacement lumps for the G400.

You can buy 4Matic versions of the current S Class in Europe too. I think we'll get 4Matic with the next generation S Class as the current platform doesn't allow it. I think there's a driveshaft in the way of the steering column?
