Love:
For all that car it was really cheap, less than £5K.
It's a V8.
Some of my neighbours think I'm a rich bd.

Hate:
Fuel consumption.
It has a rattle that I can't trace.
Some of my neighbours think I'm a rich bd.

2014 Audi S3

Love:
- The Jekyll and Hyde nature of the car, happy to pootle or be pushed.
- The noise from the exhaust on the upshifts.
- Straight line acceleration, how easy it is to get the power down

Hate:
- Seems to attract tailgaters, maybe I should have got it debaged.
- On undulating/bumpy surfaces the car doesn't seem to feel very sure footed.
- Auto dimming rear view mirror would be better if it had manual control.

On the 50min drive home from work at 4am sunday morning, in a world of my own I was cycling several pro's and con's of owning my R32 through my head (mainly to keep my mind working and myself awake at that type of morning!). Thought this could be an interesting thread, and quite good to see if those who own the same cars think similarly on their choices.

List your car(s) and 3 things you love and hate about them!

'09 MK5 R32
I Love:
1.The Noise! Makes all the right noises that a little golf really shouldn't make.
2.Grip/Traction- Amazing in the dry, equally in the wet with PS2's - Truly Fantastic.
3.Interior luxuries / comfort- Heated leather/T/C Sat Nav etc..has everything the average driver ever needs!

I Hate:
1.Short ratio gearing...Cruising at 70 in 6th it feels like there should be an extra gear!
2.Boomy exhaust - at 2k revs the exhaust 'booms' and vanishes again there after
3.Certain cars it attracts, constantly have boy racer and rep cars glued to my rear bumper on motorways/fast roads.

Hate is quite a strong word, but I'll leave it as it is and see what your thoughts are!
Those reasons (and more) were why my affair with an R32 only lasted 18 months.

I chopped it in for a (remapped) GTI Edition 30 and it's a better car in every single way that is important to me as a daily / occasional fun car. Sure, it hasn't got the R32's traction off the line, but that kind of aggressive launching accounted for <5% of the whole time I owned an R32.

I don't quite know how VW managed to produce a car that's so tantalising on paper, but incredibly dull to drive, but they did! Poor choice of engine if you ask me. The 3.2 has a crap power band, a noticeable step in power at 4000 when the intake switches over, and then feels gutless beyond that.

It does sound silly - but back when I had an RX-8 I'd too have listed the fuel economy as positive - not for the reason you give but simply because it's basically the same whether you drive it like a granny or like you stole it ;-)

2005 Forester XT

Likes -

Smooth, thrummy torquey engine.

The way that driving on bumpy roads fast doesn't faze it. The supple suspension and traction just deals with anything, effortlessly.

Superb, old school all round visibility.

Dislikes -

Loads of road and wind noise on motorways.

Seats are unsupportive and uncomfortable after around 40 mins.

Immobiliser kicks in again about 15 seconds after opening the door, so you have to press the remote button again while starting - awkward and pointless.

The Fiat isn't really something you could love or hate so the following applies to my Alfa.

Love.

The way it sits down on the rear wheels and blasts out of corners waving a front wheel in the air.

It looks like a mid 80's Touring Car before the team stickered it up.

Hardly anyone else has got one.

Hate.

It's not as fast in a straight line as I'd like.

It's getting leggy now so really needs an engine and gearbox rebuild.

Putting the gearbox in the back is great for blasting out of corners waving a front wheel in the air but not so clever for quick gearchanges.

2001 BMW 325Ci Sport

Things I love:
1. The engine, simply the best thing about the car. Superbly smooth power delivery, makes decent noise when you get into the rev range and is surprisingly good on fuel when you behave.
2. Nice clean well-proportioned design that has aged well (for a 14 year old car), everybody seems to like how it looks and it appears rather more pricey than it actually was!
3. Bit of a silly one but I'm a massive fan of the electric rear pop-out windows, fresh air, exterior noise, but no wind noise!

Things I hate:
1. The car does have rather a lot of electronic gizmos and assists (for my liking anyway), and of course these to lead niggling problems. One example is the intermittent electric sunblind which won't pop up sometimes, so unnecessary yet so annoying hehe
2. It isn't the easiest car to work on, everything has a certain difficulty to remove, of course this shows good quality but I'd prefer it if it didn't take me a good 15mins to remove a door card.
3. That's about it really, if I had to pick a third point I'd probably say a 6th gear would finish the car off nicely, but hardly something I hate!

E46 M3:

Love|

The engine - certainly a contender for greatest straight six ever made. Lacks a little low down torque but it just pulls and pulls until you need to catch a glimpse of the lights on the tacho thinking you must be on the limit, but theres always more. Makes a superb sound even stock while it does it.

SMG - I love the mechanical, brutal nature of the SMG box. Drove a PDK Porsche not so long ago and it's so smooth in comparison to the M3, almost can't tell you're changing. Standing on the accelerator at about 4k and pulling for a lower gear in S6 and taking it through the box never gets old. I find it perfectly pleasant to drive in town, and even use auto mode occasionally, as does the wife every time she drives it.

The looks - BMW got the E46 coupe so right, the M3 still looks superb today; filled out in all the right places, but purposeful and sleek. Had it for 2.5 years but still find myself turning back for a quick look.

Dislike:

Brakes - the standard ones are a bit crap. Even 4 pots on the front would give a little more confidence.

Gearing - sixth could be a little longer. My 330 did about 2k at 60 in sixth, the M3 is much shorter. It's a good car to cruise in and I've taken in to the Alps, but the autoroute experience would be slightly better with lower revs.

Cost of a CSL airbox. Nuff said!

2002 Audi S8

Love:
1. The understated looks
2. The comfort & space
3. Not too shabby in the power & speed departments

Hate:
1. 23 MPG average no matter how carefully it's driven
2. It eats front suspension parts. So did my previous Audi, and the one before that. Is it an inherent Audi trait?
3. That one day something will go bang and it won't be worth repairing. Probably the gearbox.

2005 Fiesta ST

Good;

1) Handles extremely well.
2) Looks nice when its clean. (Admittedly not very often.)
3) Been very reliable.

Bad;

1) Extremely thirsty for not-very-good performance if I'm being honest.
2) The 17" wheels were a stupid idea and whoever chose them should be shot. Far better car on 16".
3) Needs a 6th gear for motorways.

My God the sheer speed of the think
The noise
Quite subtle looks, especially in black.

Hate
The ride, it's way too firm, but I knew that before I bought it frown
It's a license loser. I have to constantly check my speed which is hard as 30mph barely moves the needle!
The crappy iPad screen that looks like it's from 1972

Good thread!

2002 Alfa 166 Super

Likes
1. Engine - Creamy smooth Busso V6, pulls much better than the figures suggest
2. Interior - The momo leather is lovely
3. Rarity - Not many about

Dislike
1. Suspension - mines getting tired and some parts are hard to find. I'll group the brakes in here as well, for a car having brembos, the braking performance is shoite - fade very easily
2. Maintenance - An utter git to work at
3. The turning circle is atrocious

2008 B6 Passat Highline estate

Likes
1. Practical, loads of room and cubby holes for stuff
2. Comfortable, really laps up the miles
3. Cheap to fuel

Dislikes
1. The utterly bone electronic handbrake - Why VW, just why!?
2. Diesel clatter, mine is the later CR engine but still has the usual dag dag noise. Awaiting DPF and DMF borkage at some point no doubt.
3. Not at all special but I guess a diesel estate never will be

2005 Toyota Yaris D4D

Likes
1. The cheapest car I've ever owned in terms of total ownership and running costs
2. Reliability, just refuses to die and feels in good order at nearly 130K miles
3. Err... easy to park?

Dislike
1. No concession made to fun, a Fiesta or Clio for example would be much better to drive if not as durable
2. The gearing and power delivery is cack, pulling onto a roundabout in 2nd at 10mph is a no no
3. It's so cheap I can't justify selling it

Agree with most of that but to add...

Like:

- Steering, Very nice and direct.
- Braking, managed to avoid rear ending my mate in his Ferrari on some back road having met a tractor coming the other way ( no we were not speeding tongue out)
- Gear Stick, nice.

Hate:

- Having to contort yourself to get the seatbelt
- Noise? Hmm never sounded all that good to me...
- 6k rpm before you get that bit more, seems strained to me these days but then it's her car so I can moan about trivia biggrin
