Thanks all am thoroughly enjoying watch these roll in so. A couple of other memories:
-Old man got a Sierra 2l on loan when some work being done on his Orion in the late 80s. He took it on to the Military Road with me in (Ponteland to Gilsland in N'Land) and took it up to the tonne which I was amazed at (more so now, good job we didn't have to stop in a hurry)
-Likewise my mother had a Lancia Therma for a few days whilst her car was in the shop - despite much egging on from me she refused to give it the beans properly but still remember the wafty acceleration to this day
-Last one: seeing a white 3dr Cosworth in my local town parked up. Without going off on a Cosworth w*nkathon it stopped me in my tracks.
Happy days

Oldest one I remember is SDT291L, a red Cortina with black vinyl roof.
Also remember:
FUB267Y, a blue Escort 1.1 that we went to bloody France in!
A171MNW, a green Cavalier 1.6L, nicer transport to France than the Escort apart from my mums Richard Clayderman tape!
D568LUB, a hearing aid beige Astra Merit 1.2
F401DWR, a Rover 216 SE EFi. First car we ever had with electric windows. And it had wood!

G414 HCK - A Matisse Blue Ford Fiesta 1.1LX that my mum bought to replace the Ford Fiesta Popular she was forced to buy to replace the very unreliable Metro Moritz she had before that. I can't remember the registrations of the older cars. She bought it with an insurance payout after my father died of Cancer. Four days after she got it she left it parked on a town centre multistory car park. It was an eye catching colour and the G registration had only been launched a few days before, so it was obviously brand new. Some jealous chav decided to put a deep key scratch right across the bonnet from one corner to another. She had a nice new car but in pretty st circumstances, but there are always people who think everybody else has some privilege they don't and want to get at them.
L850 KBV - The red Fiesta 1.1LX she had next. The colour faded to pink within four years.
S230 JRN - A Bright Green (actually dark green, despite the name Volkswagen gave it) Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - The Fiesta got part exchanged for this along with the Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Breeze in silver, P230 ACW, that my grandad left when he died. We ended up getting rid of the Polo because of electrical faults the Volkswagen garage couldn't fix. The indicators and windscreen wipers would only work intermittently.
OU03 OBN - A Grey Anthracite Volkswagen Polo 1.2S - Bought with 700 miles on the clock having previously belonged to Volkswagen UK. Every previous car was brand new but we needed a replacement for the green Polo urgently and this was available straight away and was relatively cheap compared to a brand new car which the budget didn't allow for at that time. It seemed to get an unusual amount of attention for a fairly mundane grey Polo with random people waving at us and crowding around it looking at it on car parks. It was also my first car as I bought it from my mum when I was at university.
PK55 WVN - A Flash Red Volkswagen Polo 1.2S - Bought too hastily out of the Volkswagen showroom so I could take on the grey Polo. It was a 55PS one while the grey one was 64PS. The lower power and two valves per cylinder rather than four made it too slow rather than quick enough for modest purposes like the grey one was. It was hardly used and, even though my mum regretted buying it and didn't really like it, she kept it for nearly nine years, longer than any car she's had before. She swapped it for an Up a couple of years ago and I still see it around.
