Do the M6 route - and make sure you stop here for one of the best breakies ever

He'll get a whole bunch of roadwords whichever way he goes. M6 would be the least painful I'd say - just the nightmare section J16-19 to hope and pray someone hasn't failed to keep their motor between the lines and stacked it.
M1 is no fun while the roadworks Northampton to Catthorpe and M18 to Barnsley are ongoing.
A1 is roadwork free apart from the Leeming Bar to Barton section but don't underestimate the amount of traffic that uses the road on a weekend. Any visions of making decent progress on a relatively empty road should be quickly dismissed as the 60mph brigade will not move back to lane 1 if they can see a truck 2 miles ahead of them. The section between the M18 and Ferrybridge is particularly bad and if you average more than 60 for that entire section you're doing well. Also check in advance that the A1N is not going to be closed at J50. The diversion through the day is a 25 mile 25mph crawl.
