From S2 Elise to Z4?

Which obviously beckons the most common response, why not an MX5...I just don't think he could see himself in one, the Z4 has a much more masculine appearance and offers more punch in 2.5/3.0 form.

I've driven an ND MX-5 and an S2 Elise on track. Both sensational cars in their own way - of course the Elise is the purer of the two, but the MX-5 is an absolute hoot. It would be a real shame for your dad not to at least test drive one! In 2.0 litre Sport spec, I would say it delivers a good enough portion of the Elise's 'pure driving' experience but with some real world practicality and creature comforts.

If you're considering the Z4, I would also consider the R172 SLK/SLC - not a popular choice round these parts, but far better to drive and live with than anyone gives it credit for. My dad just took delivery of a new SLC and he's absolutely delighted with it. The level of comfort and refinement provided by the folding hardtop is pretty much unmatched in this class. Sure, it's not a proper drivers car - far from it - but it's a fantastic daily driver, and more fun to drive than you might expect, particularly once you get the roof down. Definitely a car you could live with year round. The best bit is that nobody wants them, so expect a circa £10k discount off list price if you are buying new.

Committed the sin of agreeing on the first car he'd seen this morning - a '12 Z4 23is Highline spec in black with red leather.

It does look rather lovely, everything works (although I didn't test the heated seats).

I tried to convince him to hold out for a decent 3.0 (dealer had one but much less equipment). He was rather taken with the 2.5.

Sounds like it was already a done deal and his head was already set on a Z4.
