What’s the craic with Diesel sales of XC 60 / Q5 size of suv’s , have they suffered a downward trend in sales like others since our wonderful government moved the goalposts again ?

If so , are better deals becoming available or are manufacturers cutting back on supply ?
I had an XC60 demonstrator as a loan car recently. It was a diesel auto, which they told me make up the bulk of their sales. I didn't see any special deals for them either.

There was some fairly good lease deals on them earlier in the year

I think this thread is very good and helpful, keep it going! Got a question for the salesman...

My grandad is buying a new car through a local main dealer, they put a deposit down on a car in mid feb, and was told it should be delivered by the end of the month. He is paying for it by a PX and cash/card.

He hadnt heard anything more until early this week where the salesman rung up and stated they need the full payment by 31/03/18 so they can do all the paperwork register it etc. He was unsure so contacted us, so we called them up, and he said the car is around 4-5 weeks away still but they need the money by 31/03/18 to do all the paperwork. We queried this, as as a family we've brought many new cars and paid by cash/account and have always paid on collection, but again he was insistent they money needed to be paid. Asked what would happen if we didnt pay by then and just the usual response that 'i'll have to speak to my manager'. We've left it at that for now... We would prefer not to pay it this early as in case there are any issues etc and struggle to get he money back.

To me, it sounds like they are a few deals short and trying to get them registered to meet a end of year target, but they wont admit that.

So, shortly putting it....if your selling a new car cash, would you expect the money weeks before its delivered or on collection?

the majority if big companies will do deals on a month to month basis, so they have included this car in their figures and want to register it and there for it will show as a debt on their systems that's why they are asking for payment.

nothing unusual really but I get why customers don't like it, to be fair if you don't pay it nothing will happen, they will most likely still register it and you can pay for it when you collect.

A couple of days before hand then sure I would be happy to pay; a month though, no chance and unless registration by 31/03/2018 was written on the order that your father signed then I wouldn't want the car registered then either, I would want it registered when collected, you will be losing out on at least a months warranty too.

As soon as it is registered then the garage will have to pay for the car, this is why they want the money upon registration as opposed to at or just before collection, however it is their problem and not yours, this is the problem with high targets and registering early to hit those targets, a dealer is forever chasing their tail and living hand to mouth, it is bad business practice.

Can you register a car 4-5 weeks before it's arrived? I know I've had the odd vehicle registered whilst it was on a boat to the UK, but usually they have to be in the country before you can register a car

Yes - my wife's car was registered before it arrived in the country. It was a condition of the deal - garage was giving a huge discount to get them to the end of year numbers. We were happy to buy a new car for the price of an 18 month old one even if it meant waiting for a little bit.

As long as it's cleared customs for exit, it can still be over the water and get registered. Only a problem then if the boat sinks...

Could be worth squeezing the salesman a bit for extra discount, free servicing etc if they're that desperate

Reading the thread about “fully loaded” cars that generally aren’t. Has anyone ever sold a car where the customer really did order every conceivable optional extra?

OK, he owns the car but it's surely not going to be straightforward to get hold of it.

That is precisely why I wouldn't pay for a car so far in advance of taking delivery of it, a couple of days is fine but "the salesman says 4-5 weeks", which means 6-8 in reality; says it all about the whole financial side of the company, no chance.

I had an e46 that had everything bar a sunroof and electric door opener.
I have an E92 M3 which I think has everything.

You see, I see that a lot. “It has everything EXCEPT...” - “Every extra BUT...”

There must be cars out there that really do have EVERYTHING on it.

I bought a 12 month old Focus from a main dealer a few years back. Said dealer then went bump between me paying for the car and collecting it (a matter of a few days). I just about managed to get the car out thanks to a helpful salesman, but lost the money paid for GAP insurance. The dealer was then taken over pretty much straight away by Ford, who didn't want to know about any previous debts.

Range Rover SV Autobiography has an options list that everything on it is all FOC anyway (with the exception of a carbon fibre engine cover from memory) - so almost everyone "ticks all the boxes".
