As a youngster I always wanted a Caterham, staring through the showroom window at a luminous orange Superlight R..... it would be mine.

Fast forward a few years and I hired a Caterham SV (Powerfully built) with the Sigma engine for a weekend to see if the theory matched the reality. Loved it!!

So started doing the sums, the 12k I had got me into an old narrow bodied VX 1.6 Caterham....... so started investigating Westfields.

Eventually ended up with a Lamborghini Orange, carbon dash, Sabelt buckets, adjustable Gaz shocks, rally spec 2.0 Pinto engined Westfield. It was pretty brutal, and handling wise, I had it set up for the road and it coped admirably with my local moonscape roads. Even had the full weather gear and heated screen...

So much more bang for buck.

The car was built to a very high standard, and felt much more solid than the Caterham I had for the weekend.

To summarise, Caterhams are great, Westfield are great. For me my budget didn't stretch far enough for the Caterham I wanted so went for the Westfield. I didn't feel short changed at all, you just have to do your due diligence. The car I kept the longest.

Several years ago I built a Westfield from scratch and know what goes into these cars. I like them, but they seem very expensive for what you actually get for your money, and how much would this (test) car be worth two years down the line?

Nice to know Chris Smith's "baby" is still in business though, and seems to be doing well.

Off topic:- Anyone know what happened to factory manager John Grosvenor who used to work there abound 1990?

90% of a Caterham, half the price.
