Mercedes-AMG E63 wagon at the 'ring: Time for Tea?
Faster than a 599 and swifter than a Superleggera - the E63 Estate lays down a phenomenal Nordschleife lap
Yes, of course a lot of work has been put into ensuring the E63 can hold its own on a circuit; it's still hard to imagine, however, many buyers tackling a track day in their £100K family estate. The AMG GT R that Sport Auto recently tested, yes; the AMG wagon rather less probable.
Which makes watching the lap all the more fascinating. This is a two-tonne car, after all, and there's no way something so heavy should be capable of lapping the Nurburgring in 7:45. But it certainly does, in a captivating display of V8 blare and tyre squeal.
Actually, that's harsh on the AMG, because it does a laudable job of containing its mass and seems to turn in pretty well. Let's just say it makes up time lost in the slower bends by annihilating the following straights. Sometimes it looks like a Legoland version of the track, the straights seemingly shrunken to child size by that mighty 4.0-litre V8.
A couple of points to note before you consume the vid. See how driver Gebhardt seldom uses the gearshift paddles, preferring to rely predominantly on the most aggressive automatic setting. And as for a top speed, 270km/h shows on the run to Schwedenkreuz but sadly the GPS recorder throws a wobbly after Pflanzgarten so we're not sure about the Dottinger-Hohe; how about another attempt lads?

Best to look at this time in comparison with other Sport Auto Super Test times which are typically around 10-15s slower than the equivalent manufacturer time. Of interest the Sport Auto time (way back in 2001) for the 996 GT2 is 7:46 and the 997.1 GT3 RS time was 7:48.
It's all just nonsense....cars that won't ever be ragged around the 'ring being capable of impossibly fast times (for the type of car) ... oh and they all cost a sh*t ton
And £60k is no longer a lot, or a st ton (what ever that is?)

Who thinks a newly married 25 year old who is keen on cars can lap quicker in an AMG 45 than his 50+ year old father in law in an E63 estate who has a lot of money?
Cars are only as fast nowadays, with modern tyres, as the bravery / youthful stupidity of the drivers.
Statistically speaking..... I know there are some exceptional middle aged drivers out there. But they are in the minority given who buys this car.
It's just completely pointless.

You cannot argue with mass however.
Now my car is a diesel and obviously it’s not even remotely comparable to an AMG but with 9 ratios in the benz, I’m fairly certain that unless you’re a pro racing driver who has studied the car in and out, the sportiest gearbox setting would make your lap faster than you shifting yourself.
.....it is a 9 speed auto right?

As part of the AMG experience you get a driving day at Brooklands ragging the same car around their tight circuit. It’s quite an eye opener how much you can lean on these big estates, where they can’t hide their weight is in the tyres, which really take a pounding. The brakes have excellent fade resistance and haul you up everytime, as they should for their size!
