A CTR engine is an interesting idea, I assume you mean a K20 N/A lump or do you mean the current Turbo'd one?
Yes a K20. (No i'm not actually serious about it).

But i picked up a cheap 2004 CTR from a dealer 5 mins walking from the house (how could I resist?), and now I have use of two 200BHP 2.0 4 cylinder engines. The k20 seems like a much better engine, It feels more torquey low down, smoother etc. But it's from a different emissions era!

If I'd never got the CTR I'd have been perfectly happy with the engine in the GT86... Darn! wink

I'd love for someone to stick a Honda S2000 engine in this. 240bhp so enough power to make it a bit more interesting while still retaining the N\A feel, razor sharp throttle response and 9000rpm.

Toyota particularly have made some lovely N\A engines in the past, I guess emissions must be partly to blame but it's a shame between two big Japanese manufacturers, they couldn't come up with a slightly more interesting power-plant.

It's interesting comparing the two NA 4 pot 'performance' engines currently available from Toyota and Mazda, particularly when you look at them in mildly tuned form, i.e. both with manifold CAT removed, map and some better breathing etc.

Power outputs are similar (205-214bhp ish) but the Mazda Skyactive engine feels much more responsive, revs more cleanly and with better low down torque. Mazda have done a better job all round which I suspect is due to their commitment to a NA powertrain, a breath of fresh air for those of us fed up with forced induction.
