RE: Ford Mondeo ST24: Spotted
Discussion
Heh,
I bought an Ex-Police ST200 by mistake about 14 years ago (ebay after a heavy night of drinking) for around £500
Drove it home - Parked it up for 6 months - Drove it once or twice (used it to teach my busty cousin to drive around the fields) - Sold it to some emergency response group.
The most exciting part of ownership was giving the driving lessons.

I owned an ST24 around 2-3 years ago, I bought it as a cheap daily run about, the rear arches where gone on it so I scrapped it at MOT time, that said I really enjoyed driving the car, was a lovely thing to drive, not overly fast at all but a great motorway drive, If the one in the ad had been an Estate I'd have been very tempted to buy it.
The car I bought after was a Mk3 Mondeo Ghia X with the same engine in it, that was a lovely car too to drive, I later sold it for a 3 series BMW E91 and I wish I kept the Mondeo in hind sight, far more reliable.

Have you seen how much the vectra st200 goes for 8-10k they seem to trade in inner circles I’ve been after one for over a year just to have
Yes, pretty rare car but worth hunting out for the LSD and big APsThe weak point of the Mondeo ST200 was often reported as the brakes
Back to the ST24 and I had to look when someone said it would come off second best performance wise to an E46 320d. Apart from mpg and a top gear slogathon it looks like the V6 is still king ( just about )
Not much love for the old bus on here. Quite surprised at that, bit of badge snobbery maybe? These had a class leading chassis when launched and were universally praised. I like this one, even the colour. Nice and bright instead of the usual sea of blandness you see on the road. I also like that it has relatively small wheels compared to most moderns and I like the fact it has a small exhaust and doesn't have a massive fake fart cannon, again like most moderns. Interior was perfectly acceptable for the time and the seats in these were comfy and gripped you well.

As for the ST24 it always felt like its poorer cousin not a direct descendant. It did not handle as well and the engine was not a "performance" piece in any shape.
Nor was the ST200. 200bhp from 2.5 litres is not exactly exciting and way below the specific output I’d expect from something even remotely sporty. A stty boat anchor. The ST200 drove nicely. Was good on the motorway. Comfortable. Overtaking was a breeze. Handling was fun if thrown about. It was far from a boat anchor.
I guess alot of peoples opinion on here struggle to find anything as exicting by "todays" standards of mega bhp hatchbacks blah blah.

The ST200 didn’t have a 3 litre engine. It was the same 2.5 but with extensive changes. You’re probably thinking of the later ST220 which was in fact a 3.0.
Damn, sorry of course you're right - will stop talking about engines this week! Sorted now, thanks for heads up.Matt

Maybe, just maybe if this was the last roadworthy st24 it'd be worth somewhere near £5k. Otherwise it needs to be in the seriously overpriced thread.
Hmm, not so sure, it's top money for one ........but then ( assuming it is in the condition it looks to be in ) try finding another with this mileage and condition. There's a similar restored one with more mileage on for over 4k on Ebay from a private sale.....and if you look back at completed sales in the listings there's evidence of "milier" cars in seemingly less good condition going for 2k plus. Not so many years ago 170bhp E30 325is were going for a grand to £1500. Now much more even for non-Sports. If you don't like Fords it won't appeal, just like E30 325 Sports at 8/9k won't appeal to buyers with a dislike of BMW or the best Alfa 156 V6 at 5k to a non-Alfisti.
In the late 1990s all the salesmen in the company I then worked for drove Mondeos or Vectras, except me. I had chosen the equivalent Primara - a 2.0 SLX. They all laughed at me until they drove 'my' Primera. At the next round of car changes 2/3 of them choose a Primera. 2-litre was the max engine size we were allowed.
I have never driven a ST Mondeo although I owned a 1986 X4x4 Sierra.
