The twin cam Escort looks quite good value. Well in a world of bonkers Ford pricing any way...

3000km on the odometer...

Perhaps one of the rarest BMWs ever made (excluding silly one-offs) and apparently sold for a commensurate price this morning...
Oof!

Indeed, have always wanted an E34 M5. In fact pretty much all of the 'super saloons' of that era are just fantastic, my top picks that spring to mind that would all be bought if the opportunity arose;

Lotus Carlton
Amen to that (and the others) - combine these two and go for an E34 B10 Bi-Turbo?

My Lotus beard is but merely stubble, but that ad reads as though it isn't a Sport 160 model but rather the mods to make it nearly one have been added later. Is that the case?

That's the way I read the advert too, plus it hasn't got 160 seats. Looks stunning but is a lot of £

Never have driven any of the three I always enjoy a re-read of the 1992 January Performance Car with their 4 day test of the Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo, Lotus Carlton and Mercedes 500E.

Although some of their performance figures were skewed (self-admitted in the article) by having a Swiss spec Lotus Omega with 'only' 362bhp instead of 377bhp, and the boost on the Alpina was turned down, the article does come up with a few gems, such as;

The Alpina is;
" more subtle in appearance (than the Lotus) more stylish on the inside"
" lacks the Lotus's docile nature"
"Sharper and more eager its chassis certainly is..."

The Mercedes is;
"the car the rest of us would most like to point in the direction of (home)"
"can use all the performance effortlessly"
"the proverbial iron hand in a velvet glove"

The Lotus;
"looks mean and moody, but it isn't"
"what it lacks in class compared to the other two, it more than makes up for in friendliness"
"It's not the best, but it is the nicest"

I've had chances to buy both a Lotus and a Bi-Turbo over the years but the fear of costly bork has always driven me from their ownership. That's admittedly very wimpy but life outside of cars has to drive priorities sometimes and that's why they're not, and probably never will be now, on my driveway.

I thought you'd been looking at the last ever issue of Performance Car from 97 when I saw your list of 4 cars

Fab stuff gents. Agreed re that era if cars and magazines - could be my age but it brimmed with indefatigably awesome examples of both.
