Welcome to a new thread everyone!

I really want a green six cylinder w124 saloon again. This keeps coming up. I wish it was significantly cheaper! https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1088209

Centre armrest is nothing less than a health hazard. Could be and certainly should be vastly better prepared if they’re looking for six thousand pounds.

Frankly, I don't think I'm going to buy anything for a while until this current nonsense sorts itself out.
This makes me a little bit sad. Not directed at you, derin, just a general muse.

It is getting a bit daft, though.

I think, on this thread at least, it will possibly just mean a shift away from what has been our usual targets for years into more modern stuff where the market does actually remain competitive and sane?

Not that it's strictly within the remit of this budget but I was just looking on Facebook at a gorgeous looking Merc 2010 SL300 with only 50K on the clock for less money than that E30 318is that I cited earlier! And, a BMW 635D Sport Cabrio with 69K for £5000 less than the 318is. A 630i Cabrio with 70K miles for a whopping £11,000 less! And, actually £3000 less than that shoddy looking W124 Saloon.

I agree with that Derin.

To some extent it's supply and demand and happens with all cars. As a plentiful supply of good examples dwindles, the good ones go up in value which excites the pricing of the remaining crap examples to silly levels.

I am supposed to be reducing my number of cars - but my 'The Man' is busy for 6 weeks so keep looking around!

Naaaw, don't be daft! How about this for a bargain? Nearly 7k. And it's in Greece.

Real shame, it's an icon of a car.

Anyone that can resurrect this is a alchemist/genius or a educationally-challenged Euromillions winner.
One of these is my dream blank cheque resto mod project.

No idea what the red/red 190e is like but I recognise the eBay user ID and I think the seller is sound.
I get into a car with a red interior every day, it's dead easy smile

Thanks. The car is in Wylam so not really Newcastle. My parents live nearby so had a look, but they have never bought a car more than 2 years old so basically just thought it was old!
I've dropped you an email.

Good Morning All,

Another mammoth thread begins. I started posting near the beginning of Volume 13, then promptly dropped out of PH for about 8 months.
Read the 400-odd pages I missed over several days a couple of weeks ago, and just made it back in before the end.

I had thought to ask about this on here as there have been some frankly ridiculous prices touted of late. I had wondered if it was just me thinking this, but it seems that I am not alone.

I for one was very surprised to see £6k+ being asked for a Peugeot 605 near the end of the last volume (low miles PRV V6 or not), and £18,000 for a 318is? All sounds a bit dotcom boom or South Sea Bubble to me.

There is still a lot of value to the post 1995ish- 2000s era sector. And maybe you are right Derin, perhaps a new focus on what we would consider to be more modern machinery might have to take place. Anyway, it will still largely be stuff considered ancient by the general public.

Over budget, but sounds like a good one.
Budget stretch excused - especially when you compare it with similar (crazy) money for these rot boxes.

That looks a lot newer than an 07 plate and has incredible road presence.

I that's a perfect analogy.

I think a shift in the fayre seen in this thread will change by default and through natural causes. If we're to stay with the £1-5K budget, the stuff we've been used to posting and buying (e.g. decent W124s, W201s, E34s and the like) will either no longer fall into that budget or those that do will be such woefully poor examples that we'll either be too sensible to consider buying them or even too embarrassed to post them.

I think this will all just happen on its own because this has always been "The £1-5K Smoker Barge Thread" and not "The £1-5K Classic or Pseudo-Classic Barge Thread".

In some ways there will always be a bit of nostalgia but sentimentality is not what this thread is about and that's what I've always liked about it. This thread has an edge of ruthless realism to it. It's always been mainly about knowledgeable Beards sharing their knowledge and knowing what is a good car (of any make ),what still remains a good car and yet is now a fraction of that car's cost compared with new.

I'm with Derin on this - e.g. I recall when we used to get (decent) W126 SECs in the thread, but unless someone is busting the budget that's no longer the case.

Another phenomenon that I've noticed of late is the current plague, not of ladybirds, but of 'Barn Finds'.

That did actually used to mean that and you'd see literally maybe a handful per year being advertised as such. Now it has become synonymous with and attached to every piece of rotten and neglected ste.

Britain actually doesn't contain enough barns for this description to tally up.

New Volume Resolution No.2:

Any c$nt who describes their car in the advert as a "Barn Find" gets an instant back-button ignore from me from now on. They're not worth wasting further reading time .

I fully agree, and that's part of the appeal. We all love the whimsical and aspirational, but we also run these things as dailies so they need to work. The knowledge and opinion here helps de-risk the leap into the unknown.

I think it's inevitable that the cars we see here that are in budget, in spirit and which meet our expectations will change over time. That's probably a good thing too; I love an old Mercedes but even I get sick of seeing the same old models getting posted over and over.

That's probably the keenest priced I've seen for a while. If it wasn't silver I think it would be nigh-on perfect

As BMW said in their advert for the then new 7-Series back in the 1980's:

"The luxury that does not evolve; is the luxury car that will not survive."

So too the Smoker Barge that does not evolve; is the.....

In fact, it is hilarious if you watch this video and every time he says " car" you substitute in the words "smoker barge". laugh
