I'm paying £300 for a 1 y/o Merc GLC, outer London. Mid 50's, me and the wife, max ncb. Sure I'd be paying £200 or less if I had a Citroen C1 or similar.
That sounds reasonable - I'm a bit outside the M25 and paying a bit over £300 a year for a 14 year old BMW 330i with Max NCD.

What model of GLC do you have?
Nothing fancy, just a 220d Premium Plus. But I was mulling over going bonkers and getting the GLC43, and that was only about £40/year more to insure. Truth is, for what we need it for, the 220d ticks all the boxes.

In my experience, over the age of about 35, it's almost entirely claim history and postcode that determine the price of the premium.

I'm in my late 30s and used to always pay £800-900/year regardless of car. 3 years ago I moved 15 miles, and the same cars are now £200-250 to insure. Nothing else changed on the policy apart from my postcode.

From my experience, the easiest way to get low premiums is to run around in a cheap old car, and the easiest way to get a cheaper renewal is to tell them you've had a better offer. Both myself and the car are in our early twenties and I pay approximately £350 annually to insure it (306 GTI-6).

My renewal came in at about £450 (it was just shy of £600 the year before), but I phoned them up and claimed to have been quoted £350 on a comparison site. My provider agreed to match that figure.

It's well worth doing, as you've got nothing to lose and a decent amount to gain for the sake of a five-minute phone call.

I’m having a good insurance year this year, had my 335D for 5 months and then changed to an E220cdi, my premium went from 600 a year to 550, I was disappointed with the seemingly low reduction but then at renewal it dropped to 420 without prompting, and they added in protected NCD, breakdown cover and legal protection which if included in all of the other quotes I got took it back past £600 a year again.

First time I’ve ever decided to accept a renewal price!

No excuse for not insuring, especially on grounds of cost.

Insurance is based on risk - your risk, and the model of car risk based on previous claims if similar cars. So that's the price you pay.

You buy a car, you buy petrol, you buy tax, you pay maintainence, you pay for servicing and breakdown cover... Then moan about the insurance.

FFS. No excuse to never have insurance. It's too valuable when things go wrong - and not just for you, but for others who may be involved. If you can't insure a car at a price you find acceptable, either improve your own risk profile to lower the premium or choose a different car with cheaper premium. Or use a bus.

I have just received my renewal quote through the post for my E220 from LV and it is £3 cheaper than I was quoted on line at £170.

My other half's Renault Scenic is also due at the end of the month and we have just been quoted £113 on line with Sainsbury Bank.

I think its a trap!!
