Hi

I have a question regarding the Official BMW MPPSK upgrade kit... It looks good, sounds good, but is expensive compared to getting more BHP against the myriad of companies out there doing ecu upgrades. What would you do? This would be for a 440i Grand Coupe

My thoughts:

BMW
Good - Spend £1900 for 35/40 extra BHP, get a fruity sounding exhaust, and have it all warranted by BMW for 2 years! plus you don't invalidate your warranty . BMW official product so the car doesn't feel too modified.
Bad - Spend £1900 for a relatively low upgrade in BHP, exhaust can be loud in sport/sport+ and a bit anti-social!

External tuners
Good - Can get up to 100+ BHP increase, cost around £750 - £1000 if you go to someone good, but perhaps as low as £250- £500 if you take a bit more of a risk.
No noisy/fruity exhaust, looks stock

Bad - Invalidates your warranty! . No guarantees there won't be a problem. When selling on, buyers don't like modified/fettled cars..i know i have just tried to sell a modified Seat Cupra ( not easy) ..Dealers are not interested in your car and how much money you have spent doing it up! You have to sell private , which is not good if looking for part-exchange deals!

Anyway, i digress, anyone have a MPPSK fitted..i would love to know what living with it on a daily basis is like? do you find it too loud in Sport/sport+? what about on the motorway..does it drone?

If i get positive feedback ...i will probably get it done! both options are good, which one would you do?

I've got the MPPSK and it's fantastic. Pretty damned loud on startup and when in sport / sport+, it's also slightly louder during normal driving.

No droning at all unless it's in sport, it just sounds amazing all the time.

The extra torque is more noticeable than the power, plus has the advantage that it's warrantied as you've mentioned. Didn't even look at other options because of this and the awesome exhaust.

I paid £1700, there were places doing it for £1500 fitted.

Oh, and mines on a 440i GC too!

I've had it on my 340i Touring since February, It is the best mod you can possibly do to the car, I would never have entertained anything other than factory mod tbh.. The sound is addictive yet in comfort mode is never too loud Either is sport or sport plus imo.. The performance difference is pretty noticeable with quite a lot more torque, I simply love this car it is perfect for my needs in every way, , Its funny how you can seem to make it noisy if you are in the mood yet it can become almost as quiet as standard when you are not in the mood, I also paid £1400 for it including the fitting / remap< I very much doubt anyone would regret getting one fitted its simply superb.

Hi Mr Sagman

Thanks for your reply..most reassuring i would say! I'm no youngster ( 68) so don't really want to be bombing around making too much noise. The compromise between Comfort and Sport/+ seems to be just right , in most posters opinion... Yeah, the start up can be noisy but i believe their is a method of keeping the revs up which reduces the early noise, till its warm. What really reassures me most is that in comfort mode it's doesn't drone on the motorway.

cheers

No worries Palfrey, I'm 53 so no spring chicken and was a little bit concerned initially, But literally nothing to worry about... Its a very intelligent system in that it actually need provoking to be noisy (if that makes sense) Start it up in comfort mode and you will not bother your neighbours at all, As for drone I can't remember having any issues whatsoever and have done a few 250 mile motorway journeys, Its such a well engineered piece of kit that they have literally thought of everything, It simply makes the car more fun (when you are in the mood) Also it makes the performance borderline brutal.

It's noisy on startup irrelevant of mode - as default it opens the flaps on both sides when it starts for around 30 secs. It can be made quieter if you hover the revs above idle.

Mine starts in comfort (as all BMWs do as default) and it's very loud. Not all that noticeable if you're inside the car, but hugely so if you're outside.

Interesting...some think it is very loud on start up, some think it is loudish, but ok, but does calm down after 30 seconds

looks like it might have to be the "old feathering the throttle" a tad technique!

I don't lose any sleep about it ... Someone across the road from me has a LOUD V8 jeep that he starts and idles at 6am, and a guy a few doors down as a VXR8 with what sounds like a straight-through exhaust.

Mine's probably tame in comparison laugh !

Hi

Well i went ahead and got the MPPSK fitted to my 440i, even though i was worried about the extra noisy bits of the exhaust. Well i have to say anyone else who like me worried about it should completely forget about the worries and just have it done. Sounds great in Comfort, and awesome in Sport/+.

Infact on morning start up, which is probably the biggest issue with noise, it can be completely overcome, by slightly pressing the accelerator for the 30 seconds or so it takes to quieten down. it then settles down to almost "stock" revs.

It transforms the 440i into a different car, and i now take it out just for the pleasure of hearing that exhaust. As other posters have said if your in the mood you can make it bang, but if not, stick it in comfort and its just like driving stock.

So if your in two minds about having the MPPSK, just do it and have fun!. I'm 68 and still love modifying my cars!

enjoy!

Hey. Is yours an older car? My 340 (2018) has the petrol particulate, and BMW said they couldn't fit the MSPPK.

Glad to hear you went ahead with it smile

It's a fantastic add-on for the car, that noise with the extra torque and power is pretty addictive.

The only downside is that my next car (probably an m340i) will end up being almost silent in comparison!

Enjoy!!!!

Hi Stuart

Yep excellent addition ..just a shame that new generation of cars won't have the option!

Sign of the times me thinks!

Still an M340i sounds good to me

I recently viewed the Joe Achilles review on the M340i on YouTube... looks some motor, although i am not at all convinced by
the latest BMW's front grill design, I mean! not bad on the 340, but on the large SUV's and 7 series it looks mad ..Chinese Geeley chap been brought in? and as for the next generation 4 series, those flared nostrils remind me of Kenneth Williams... "Carry on BMW"!!
