It's always impressive to see such wit and repartee on PH.

What are you driving these days?
Porsche owners. Strange lot.

Whats wrong with comparing it to a cayman?
The problem is it’s reviewing favourably, which upsets the Porsche crowd.

Agreed. The similarly priced Exige V6 has barely had a mention in this thread. Massively quicker and, dare I say it, a manual gearbox for "real enthusiast drivers".
That car would probably be my choice.

Do like the look of the Alpine, just could not want that gearbox.

Exige starts at £62k, that’s quite a lot more expensive. Plus it makes for hard work as a daily, whereas the Alpine is easier to live with. So all in all Exige isn’t a great comparison.

Indeed...

Are you getting an Alpine then or are there others on the shortlist?

It’s a dilemma. I’m always torn between a fun car that can be used as a daily, and something that’s a bit less usable but a bit more thrilling.

Shortlist is currently the Alpine, 997 gts, another Evora or an Exige.... outside chance of a 4C. I need to narrow down the shortlist by making sure I really know what type of fun car I want (more usable or more theatrical).... I’m not going to rush the decision. Could be anytime between now now and the summer. If I go for the Alpine it would be a stock car, I’m too impatient to wait for a build once I’ve decided so I’ll pick the closest spec to what I would have chosen from the current dealer stock.

Nice problem to have. Any of those are great cars.

For all the talk of “modern cars being crap”, we’re certainly lucky to have choices.

You’d hope enthusiasts would generally be positive about the Alpine joining the party even if it isn’t quite right for them.

Miserablegit and Yonex turn up time and time again, shouting angrily and adding nothing to the discussion.

Base Alpine is 10% more expensive than base Porsche. Base Exige is 10% more expensive than Alpine. Exige is light and very quick. As such, Exige seems eminently suitable for comparison with the Alpine. Yet there's barely a mention of it - which seems a tad curious, given the high regard for Lotus on PH.

I think you’ll find I’ve added far more of value to these discussions than you have Rockin

Lotus make excellent sports cars. The Exige is brilliant but is about £65k and is a little more difficult to daily than an Alpine. Entry / egress in a Lotus is hampered a little by the wide sills.

Your point is well made. The cars you mentioned are all serious contenders.

What are you on about? Base Alpine and base Porsche are £46k, base Exige is £63k. Nearly £20k more!

Alpine is usable daily and so gets compared to Porsche.
Exige is a focused, raw machine that i personally wouldn't cross-shop with these. that would be the Evora.
4C too noisy to be in same list too.

I cross shopped, used Evora, Alpine, Cayman, 997, Exige, V8 Vantage, Maserati, R8 and Ftype. But a mix of new and used all at similar price point. A wide range of styles and abilities.

The A110 and the Elise/Exige are really not similar, certainly as a daily driver. The Alpine approaches Lotus fun/involvement on day out but they are really not a cross shop IMO

I’m cross shopping these. And I’m actually surprised how much towards the usable end of the spectrum the Alpine is. Part of the decision of course is where on the raw / refined spectrum you want to be.

There’s always been a gap there. The Elise being too hardcore and the Cayster being too sterile. Honda tried with the S2K but there’s never been a decent coupe IMO. This is where the Alpine is perfect.
