Plates of Glory - DVLA reg sale now on!

Promised yourself a private plate for 2020? The DVLA's biggest ever auction is on now

A new year means the release of new car registrations, and while some buyers will be keen to see a shiny new '20' plate adorning their vehicle, they're certainly not as exciting as the '69' plates they replace (snigger). Those on the hunt for something a little more special for their pride and joy, however, are in luck, with the DVLA announcing its largest ever personalised registration auction.

The 2,750 lots available during the 10-day process represent 250 more opportunities to find your perfect plate than ever before, and that may not be the only record broken this time around. If last year's sale of IG 1 resulted in the DVLA's third highest ever sum of £222,000, then you'd have to imagine that offerings such as 2002 A, 44 0, 180 A and 106 T have a good chance of reaching similar heights, let alone plates like F40 TOY and 550 GT which actually mean something.

Then there's BMT 214B, which may sound slightly familiar to James Bond fans for its similarity to the BMT 216A registration which appears on one side of the rotating plate used on 007's famous DB5. Elsewhere the likes of AMG 63G, VW14 BUG and LO15 TUS all start with reserves of just £250, while WRX 555S could be a steal at £200, meaning there's something for petrolheads of all budgets on offer.

Jody Davies, the DVLA's Senior Sales Manager for Personalised Registrations said of the auction: "Our online Timed Auctions are proving extremely popular, with a big variety of personalised registrations to suit all tastes and budgets this auction offers our customers more choice than ever, we look forward to what is sure to be an exciting few days of bidding ahead."

If you fancy taking part yourself then a full lot list can be found here.

The reserve figs don’t tend to be a realistic indicator of what it takes to win one at auction.

They need to resurrect 'dead' plates from cars that have gone to the scrap yard, then they'd have my attention.

So is there VAT, plus 8% buyers premium +VAT plus £80 fee on top of the bid?
That's going to crank the final price up..

What did your father do, exactly? A plate dies with the car; the DVLA can not reissue a VRM once the car it was on has been scrapped.

Why not? Sounds a missed business opportunity. I would love to buy my late Dad’s number from his first car.

When you bid it tots all that up for you and you confirm it before a bid is placed.

Absolutely.

One Govt. Department (DVLA) sells you a plate that looks like a word or name.

Another Govt. Department (Police & Courts) fines you or confiscate your plate if you make it look like a word or name.

Or

One Government department sells you a plate because you're an enthusiast that doesn't just buy a white goods car but spends some money on buying something you want and then personalises it.

Another Government department fines you or confiscates your plate because you were an arse and broke the established rules by trying to make your plate read like something it isn't.

There’s one I’d like, no bids so far so it’s at £1200, min bid is £1210, plus VAT is 1452, plus 8% (and VAT on that) is £1591.39, plus £80.

£1671.39 for it if nobody else bids. I don’t like it that much.

I'd like to know too.

I sold a car which was exported but didn't retain the plate. I inquired about buying it back later as it was no longer in use (it was then on German plates), but was told it can't be done.

I have a single digit moved across (oh the shame) and have even had speeding fines come to the house with no fine for a "bad" plate. Also had the Rozzers behind and in front of me and again no stop or fine. Imho it depends if you are taking the piss or not eg adding screws etc to make an 11 look like a zero would do it.

It is a nice pretext for the Constable Savages of this world to pull you over for ‘wearing a loud shirt while driving in a built up area’

Within the past couple of years I enquired about a plate which appears to have been let go via scrapping the vehicle and DVLA told me they would not re-issue it even if the car was proven to be scrapped.

If you know a way around that I'd be glad to hear?
