Totally irrelevant but annoys the life out of me, Is it just me or do people expect a fast car to be going fast 24/7. Can’t stick to speed to the limit because eager tts keep bumming the life out of you grrrr. My cars a tuned turbo so I drive really easy when the cars cold and constantly have every idiot flashing me and even horning, what the hell is wrong with people, there in no major rush once they pass me and overtake as they just drive at a normal speed afterwards but what is wrong with people, happened in my last car and now my new toy and Infact any quick car I’ve had, I never rag my cars cold and there generally my pride and joy so I slow down for speed bumps and great big pot holes etc...I know I’m not been paranoid as when I drive the mrs car or my my little runaround people don’t hassle me, soon as I’m in the toy they coming from every direction annoys the life out of me, what’s wrong with people!!!!

It's something I've found too after years of driving performance cars.

I do a few things to avoid this type of situation.

1. Awareness. If I see someone barreling towards me, I'll touch the brake pedal just to light up the brake lights when they're perhaps 10 car lengths behind. This is just lighting up the clusters, not actually braking! Often stops them in their tracks and they maintain distance.

2. Leave a larger gap between you and the car in front. Often this seems to subliminally tell the driver behind to leave a larger gap between them and me.

3. If they end up on your arse, see point 1. Again you're just touching the brakes to light up the brake lights, not actually slowing the car down!

4. As an alternative to point 4, just come off the gas and coast some to slow down.

5. Boot it and lose them.

6. Pull into a bus stop or drive way and let the f--ker past.

7. Just ignore them.

Ultimately you'll always have knob ends on the road and you may never be able to stop this, but at least you have some options

I have to say though, generally these days it's not Roy Bacer in his souped up wagon that's sitting on my rear bumper. It's the Tiny Lady, huge sunglasses, crossover/4x4 types.

Now I shall prepare to laugh and ignore those people who will jump to the conclusion that I'm advocating brake testing people with points 1 and 3. wink

Lol I’ve tried all the suggestions many times, it’s got to the point that where I know there’s a nasty pot hole or dip in the road upcoming on a route I know, I have to a) lose the person behind me or b) pull up and let traffic pass. A lot of people may think this is abit OTT but I’m the one that’s going to have to fork out money for a costly repair whilst they just fly over humps and pot holes because there cars either a rental or some old rust bucket! Very annoying, for me the problem are white van men and vans in general and teen kids who just want to try there luck with you lol funny thing is anyone with a quick car respects the car and won’t try it on, and I’ll also show respect and distance myself from something I know someone spent a lot of money on

It's not just 'performance cars'. It's all cars. British people drive aggressively, tailgate a lot, and don't really seem to think what they are doing**. It's something you really notice after time away from the country. Maybe it's caused by lack of space and stress, or drugs. Who knows.

  • As an example, yesterday morning I followed 2 other drivers down a M/Way slip road onto the M60, the traffic on the M/Way was coming to a stop in lanes 1 and 2. I slowed down, stayed on the filter lane and merged into lane 1 quite far down. No fuss. The other 2 joined the M/Way at 50 MPH minimum, swerved straight over lanes 1 and 2 to (presumably) get to the faster traffic in lanes 3 and 4, and there was inevitably the sound of a very large crash as they hit the back of near stationary traffic. I can't comprehend why people do stupid things like this.
Another one happened the day before coming off the M66, someone barreled down the exit slip road weaving in and out of the 2 lanes, to then have to brake so hard for the traffic light that firstly we got the flashing brake lights, then when it had stopped, the hazard lights came on. You would think people would feel a tit behaving like that but they seem not to.

Precisely, why rush around like a headless chicken when the guy your tailgating will only catch you at the next set of traffic lights anyhow?!? I live in London and it’s the same story every day, just this morning I was going round a round about with the car ahead of me only 2 cars lengths ahead, travelling about 20/25mph and I’m getting flashed and eventually overtaken, I mean what the point on a bloody roundabout. Totally agree it’s just the culture here, but even first thing in the morning when your cars exhaust are puffing away as the cars cold and the windows are frosted up, people just expect you to do 40/45 mph in a 30, get horned at for doing 25? It’s bonkers

I enjoy coasting down to painfully slow speed watching them getting uppity then flooring it. Childish I know but it is fun.

Must admit, I’m guilty of doing the same- sometimes get so fed up I just floor it- really regret it afterwards and apologise to the car (when she’s cold) lol funny thing is they won’t be satisfied till they pass you, it becomes there mission to get past you ASAP lol

I can also throw into the mix drivers of VW Golfs, Mercedes A class and Audi A3 - I might be missing something but if I see a set of headlights come up behind me at a seriosly quick speed, or I hear an engine being hammered, or someone passes me at light speed, inevitibly it will be one of these cars.
Now either they are the fastest cars around ? or they are are generally bought by idiots with something they feel they need to prove as they couldnt afford much more than a car their Nan would buy for picking up the groceries.

Just ignore them? If when you are walking along the pavement someone comes walking much faster up behind you and walks around you then cuts in front do you get angry at them? As long as you are going at a reasonable pace no problem.

Not really a good analogy.

Far easier and safer to overtake on foot. No legally mandated direction of travel. If someone bumps or brushes past you when they walk past you, there's no damage and resultant insurance claim.

Apples and oranges.

I've started using this as my defence tactic after reading it on here: Let right off the throttle so you slow down, as they get closer and closer, then accelerate gently again back up to the speed limit, and then as they approach your rear end again, let off the throttle and repeat ad infinitum.

I was being pedantic. If someone is getting wound up and angry because they are being tailgated then they need to get out the car and really have a think about what they are doing in it, as being in that sort of mind set is not safe. If something like this absolutely winds someone up then I would dread to think what happens if someone crowds them on a tube train, or bumps into them on the street.

Yes its frustrating, but ultimately its the other person that is the problem, don't become part of it by playing road games with them. Just drive as you normally drive and if they want to boot it past you then fine let them go on their way.

You could just drive normally from cold like you would in any other car?

There’s no need to crawl along in such a manner as to get people annoyed.
In fact you are probably impeding the car’s ability to warm up in a reasonable time.

You should get yourself a 335d then map it, as soon as they see it, they’ll know there’s no way they’ll ever go faster, so they’ll back off.

As capable as mapped 335d is mate I’d leave it for st lol previously owned M cars and same drama in them. I really don’t think I am being an annoyance driving 5mph less then the roads speed limit. It’s clear my cars huffing and puffing and frosted up just leave me be. If your so eager overtake me I have no issue with that, I fact many times I’ve just pulled over and let cars pass. Problem is when people constantly flash you and even horn at you and 9 times out of 10 I will catch them at the next set of lights anyway, so what was the bloody point. It’s obviously if I really wanted to I’d leave them with ease so why do they get so touchy and frustrated.

White vans seem to be my nemesis, saying that there’s not even a type nowadays, every type of vehicle and driver is at, just a big rat race, too many people rushing and running around to no destination at all lol
