Driveways: Front in or Reverse?
Discussion
Just an observation made from being on the road a lot...
Assuming you, a) have a driveway or parking spot and b) don't have a drive-in/drive-out scenario going on, how do you park when you get home? Do you drive straight in off the road or reverse in?
Me: I reverse in for several reasons; firstly I don;t want to be reversing out when I am ready to leave. Secondly, the van is full of tools and usually expensive windscreens, so backing it up to the garage door makes it a tad more secure and puts it within view from a security POV and thirdly, I think reversed in a vehicle just looks neater; besides it's the proper way, right?

Depends on the car. In the 7, it is safer to drive in and reverse out, because if I drive out, I have to poke about 8 feet of the car into the road, before I can see down the road from the cockpit.
If I reverse out there is only a couple of feet behind me, which has to be poked into the road, so I can get a safe view down the road, much sooner.
In the Estate car, there is quite a lot of car behind me, which I would rather not poke out into the road, without being able to see what is coming down it. So with `that' car it is always best for me to reverse in and drive out.
There is also the fact that when leaving my property, I generally have a distance to cover, and want to be out and on my way as swiftly and safely as possible, which means reversing in and driving out.
However when I am returning from somewhere, I am not that bothered how long it takes me to reverse in, because at that point, I am literally home, and on my doorstep anyway.

I always reverse my car in as it's a long estate. And, anyway, it's the right way to do it.
Loads of people on the nearby main road do it the other way and have to stop two lanes of traffic everytime they set off.
It always strikes me as being pretty knob-ish to force your way into the traffic like that, borderline dangerous.
But I don't some people think too much and/or don't give a fk.

Have a long narrow garage at the back of my garden, with the garage entrance accessible by a long narrow track behind gardens to the road. The access into the garage involves a very tight turn.
I have no choice but to reverse in off the road, all the way down the alley in reverse, then reverse into the garage to get it in. I have tried this just once going forwards up the alley and into the garage, but couldn't maneuver the tight garage entrance and had to give up.
So reversing it is

I can see most PH Driving Gods reverse in.
Most people don't give a ferk.. It's not a problem for them to stop all traffic so the world can revolve around them (and I can understand there are exceptions such as the 7).
Also reversing in gives access to the engine, battery (for jump starting) and better method of towing. Yes I know smartarses your battery is in the boot of your speshal car.
Sometimes things happen - deliveries, digging the road up, parked cars opposite etc and having the foresight to reverse in makes it easier to drive out,

Reverse in every time. Driving out forwards is bad enough, my neighbours decided to buy SUVs and park too close to my splay so I have to edge out. But, like one of the posts above I see people reversing out and blocking traffic which seems pretty knobbish.
Since a big new estate went up near me, my road has been used as a ratrun, so if there is traffic when I get home I pull over to let it clear before reversing on. Unless the car behind me was speeding then driving up my arse in which case I return the lack of consideration by banging the hazards on, slowing down and doing the full manoeuvre while they wait. I'm well hard, me.

Reverse in - always as mentioned above much safer when exiting the drive, plus when I learned to drive the Highway code had a section about not reversing out onto roads, not sure if it still says the same but judging by the amount of Cockwombles that back out of their drives onto maajor roads it would appear not.

I like it. Dominate the road. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
