Why can nobody overtake?
Discussion
Maybe is a lost art nowadays but what is it with sitting in a queue of 20-30 cars doing 15-20 mph because the muppet at the front is incapable of safely overtaking a slow moving cyclist or tractor despite perfect visibility and a long straight wide road with minimal oncoming ??
The queuing cars never seem to leave much room between them either leading to excited reactions when you have to “make room” in order to queue jump, or just wait in line forever like a pleb.
If you can’t overtake safely you shouldn’t be driving. Oh I’ve read enough threads to know the long established tradition of attacking the OP so no worries there, crack on...

The simple answer is because 99.9% of drivers are simply paying no attention what-so-ever to the task of driving.
Modern cars are extremely easy and comfortable to drive
Modern cars include a raft of distracting technology
Modern drivers simple follow whatever is immediately infront of them.
Thats it, really.......

They normally don't overtake for one of several reasons:
They can see something directly in front of their Hyundai i10 but can't actually see what it is, so just follow 'it'
They're too busy chatting on the phone to realise why the traffic is moving slowly
They can't find the 'overtake assist' option on the touch screen
The above tend to be age-related.
Or, they simply can't drive and overtaking is now a long-lost skill and is seen as 'yobbish', arrogant, environmentally unfriendly, harmful to some sort of toad etc. etc. and, in any event, I thought that the speed limit was now 40mph everywhere. Has that changed?

For me the benefit doesn't outweigh the risk (on a single carriageway I mean).
What risk? If it's clear and safe, what's the risk? For me the benefit doesn't outweigh the risk (on a single carriageway I mean).
Or does your user-name sum it up? Overtaking is fine on a motorway or dual carriageway, otherwise it's a non-starter? Please tell me that's not correct.
I wasn't aware that you had to pay to overtake, is that a new Rishi Sunak tax that I've missed? Big Brother

I share your pain. Personally I love a good overtake, especially if it's a pleb I'm overtaking, NA car is the best, scream past at 7500rpm to what I assume to be congratulatory light flashing. Boosted cars are also fun, brake boost then fly past making OTT whooshing noises
Even when I'm not being a yob I find dawdlers and indecisive drivers infuriating, just make a decision and carry it out without crashing into something or inconveniencing everyone around you. People who sit behind tractors on clear, wide, fast A roads 'because 25 is plenty' should be strung up. Christ this is better than therapy

You've never been stuck in a convoy behind a combine harvester in Norfolk for half an hour, have you?For me the benefit doesn't outweigh the risk (on a single carriageway I mean).
If you think it's risky overtaking a slow moving agricultural vehicle, it might be time for you to undertake further driving instruction.
