West Mids Police are hosting a National Police Chiefs' Council online survey on the use of ANPR.
Local forces are asking for feedback.

Completed it.

Need ANPR on every corner. That'd work for me.

More ANPR the better. Increases the odds of catching those driving illegally. Helps stop criminals using the roads for other nefarious activities.

Don’t see the issue with ANPR.

There's a careful balance to be had between crim catching and China-esque surveillance.

Moreso than cameras everywhere, policy should be in place to prevent retention of data beyond reasonable durations, preferably one that mandates immediate deletion of non-suspect vehicles from logs, not only for privacy but for data security.

Completed. No issues with ANPR, it’s a valuable tool in the fight against scumbags.

Only a useful tool when there are also sufficient amounts of traffic police and general cop cars on patrol, otherwise it's trivially defeated by fake or cloned plates.

Police - "Thanks to the positive feedback about ANPR, we have decided to install ANPR with speed monitoring on every road in the county"

The stupidity evident here is staggering.

Maybe we should just start RFID chipping everyone at birth?

The slow, quiet transition to "We have now integrated average speed checking availability within the ANPR network" would be the only thing to concern me.

We (in the traffic industry) already use ANPR for origin/destination surveys, and journey time monitoring, so it wouldn't be a big (technical) step.

Tinfoil hats, don't speed, blah blah, something something.

Great idea however the hardened crims, like my neighbour, just don’t update the V5 when they buy cars / vans which allows them to never bother paying road tax (over a year in some cases). They know unless they get pulled over, they will be ok.

I don’t understand why a fine isn’t automatically sent to the registered keeper when road tax is due, unless payment has been received or SORN declaration made.

A vital tool in the arsenal of all Police Forces (I refuse to call them a Police Service, they are the Police Force).

ANPR has been absolutely crucial in far more serious cases than 'no insurance' etc.

The only people that would be against it have something to hide.

I don't like it at all. I don't like being on CCTV everywhere I go, and I don't like my journeys being tracked. I think the germans have the right attitude, with being able to opt out of having their properties appearing on google streetview. It's not even the thin end of the wedge any longer. Facial recognition, ANPR and CCTV everywhere mean we're already on the verge of very Minority Report style authoritarian policing. It has got to be put a stop to. There was once a thing called civil liberty, and that's gone.

They use ANPR with point to point cameras across vast distances in Australia to police highways, expect similar here for every long distance journey before too long.

And you probably need to ask the question why.

A sad state of affairs, but I for one would trade this in for more safety. I guess you can't have both.

Back in 2007 my beloved car was stolen.

3 days later it 'pinged' the ANPR camera going into Toddington Services.

The thief paid for pretrol (who the hell fuels up at motorway prices???) and then as he entered the entry slip back onto the M1 he was met with a three car stop.

I got my beloved car back.

He went to prison.

I like ANPR.

Mostly due to the easy acquiescence of the hard of thinking like you.
