I'm all for an EV future. It's coming and so I've accepted it.

What I can't fathom is why they all look so sh*t. There are plenty of EVs around here (there's a lot of self employed in Sandbanks it seems...) and yesterday I passed one the new Polestar EV. It looked like a lego box on stilts. Like asking a child to draw what a car looks like. I know that's subjective but I mean surely others would agree they nearly all look like MPVs.

Given that Interior Design and clothing fashion is now focussed around Retro designs (apparently the 70s is back in fashion -missus buys magazines) and all the fossils on here refusing to accept EV, why can't they bring back classic shape cars that are EV and make them affordable?

It's only because of the EV industry that you're even aware. Your own home is full of objects that you have bought that have used Cobalt. Your driveway has objects parked on it that use Cobalt. The only industry actively moving away from using Cobalt is the EV industry. Yet despite this Cobalt has become one of the latest looney focal points to attack EVs when there are so many genuine and blatantly obvious issues.

Banging on about Cobalt is like not minding paedos chasing kids in a playground until a ginger one turns up and somehow being ginger is the big issue. wink

Hilarious rolleyes

You just go on believing EVs are “green” not just (a) snowflake virtue signalling or (b) bought for tax reasons
Reading an old Fast Lane the other day (1986) and the was an editorial on turbos. I think it was written by Peter Dron, but the line was that turbos were just a blip and no real car maker or driver would be using them in the longer term, they're no good, they don't work and displacement was and always will be the default. Basically, small engines with turbos were st and will never catch on.

Sounds familiar....

I think that will happen. It's early days and the market isn't natural yet and still only exists because of subsidies and legislation. We'll get to the point in the coming years where that isn't necessary and the product can naturally out compete in price and with that you'd expect less Buck Rogers and Kitt wkery in a van shape and some more niche stuff as manufacturers seek to expand sales into more corners to attract customers from competitors.

There's no need for anyone to do anything for at least a decade unless the product happens to align well with their needs so it's best to sit back, chill and wait for the evolution.

You're begging for the guys to come along and point out that once you factor in all the regulations and considerations for mass-produced cars, the designers are already pretty limited with what they can do. wink

In reality, your comments apply to all ICE cars as well...well, the ones you don't like, of course! Look around the roads - what percentage of ICE cars genuinely look good? In the real world we see bland white goods that fly off the shelves (Nissan Juke anyone?).

BTW, I think the EV you're looking for is the Honda E...suitably retro for the OH's magazine trends. wink (Oh and check out the Renault 5 concept EV while you're on)

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks to me like a giant Lancia Delta Integrale. Pretty retro.

Thing is those who bang on about EV's being cr@p are for the most part right. What they seem to forget is that most ICE cars are pretty cr@p too. I don't think there are any EV's that are better drivers cars than the best ICE cars yet, maybe ever; but a few of them are better than most ICE cars... the Taycan Turbo being the best example. Most Mustangs are utter turds. This hideous EV thing will likely be better than most of them but not the few special ones. Picking sides is dumb. Buy which one floats your boat, or both.

But what amazes me is how vitriolic some get about them, they really do hate them and in a lot of case have never been in one, never mind driven one.

Nobody has to like them, but what really makes me laugh is the way they go on about how dreadful EV's are for the planet, suddenly all now eco warriors railing against this new threat to fragile ecosystems, funny how they have been silent for so many years about oil related incidents ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oil_spills

Not to mention all the other damage, explosions, fires etc but are now campaigning about Lithium and Cobalt mining, child labour etc.

And if you really want to set them off, mention bicycles as well.
TBF I think (hope!) some of that (if not most) is a counter to the nausea inducing holier than thou attitude that seems to flow from the early adopters/prophets

I had the opportunity to drive the Mach-e and I´m really disapointed. The Mach-e is not a Mustang, it doesn´t look like a Mustang, it doesn´t feel like a Mustang, it doesn´t behave like a Mustang and it doesn´t have the character of a Mustang. The Mach-e is nothing but another boring cookie cutter SUV with Mustang grille, Mustang tail lights, Mustang badges and Mustang pretentions. If Ford really wants to build an EV 4 door Mustang, it must be something the likes of a Porsche Taycan, an Audi e-tron GT or even a sportier looking Lucid Air or Tesla Model S instead of the make beleive Mustang they produced. Ford needs to stop with that nonsense and short minded vision of producing only SUV´s or crossovers if they really want to make competitive products and not make beleive vehicles. Not every vehicle is meant to be an SUV. The Mustang is one of those automobiles. The saddest of all, is that Ford really has the expertise and experience and could do a real EV 4 door Mustang if it only decides to go all the way.

I used to own a Fox Body Mustang so I can appreciate that disliking the Mach E might seem a touch hypocritical.
But then lets remember the Fox was still a rear-drive V8 coupe whereas this is a different market altogether.

I just think its a shame that rather than starting with a clean sheet and creating something amazing (remember the MK1 Focus after the MK6 Escort?) Ford have tried to ride on the success of the Mustang brand rather than let the model shine on its own.

It's a bit like Hollywood films - there must be millions of amazing real-life stories and novels that would make fantastic films but what we get is tepid reboots of classics that nobody will remember in 5 years.

It's objectively a Mustang.

Oh dear it seems alternative opinions aren't welcome when it comes to EV Evangelists. Have faith brother, Miraculous Battery Improvements next year.

The new modelS has a range of 520 miles (EPA, not the terrible EU measure) why would we need more improvements? What's needed is getting the price down which is happening pretty damned fast.

In before someone claims they drive over 500 at a time towing a boat.

I will grant that 520 mile range does make things more interesting with regard to electric - if that's actually achievable.
The next worry then is actual battery pack life... having to replace the power source @ 80k (for example) is more than a bit of a ball ache - not to mention (potentially) ruinously expensive

On another EV thread it's been noted that early Model-S batteries have shown 94% as-new capacity at 100k and 90% at 150k - so they've got a mileage-life that's on par with the rest of the vehicle.

Not really. The current Tesla packs have a design life of 1500 (the next one is supposed to be something like 3000) full cycles which is at least 300,000 miles. You're looking at real edge cases that are going to kill the battery before the rest of the car falls apart!

There really needs to be a joke here about the rest of the car only lasting 10,000 miles anyway... wink

Plenty of old Teslas being used as Taxis pushing 500k. Battery packs seem way more reliable than engines so far. Lots of EVs have 8 year warranties, in some cases with unlimited mileage.
