Where are these people gone?
Ascot
Slim red-lined briefcase
Nubar Gulbekian types with sashs and white gloves
Etc

Would they chose to be driven in a modern-day Phantom? Maybach? G63 AMG?

That’s good to see, I thought Buster Merryfield had passed away.

To quote a friend at Bentley, the Mulsanne has only been made this last few years because the Phantom had stopped production. There's all but no market for a circa 250k posh/luxury saloon now so no one bothers to make one anymore.

Depends on your definition of "posh", I mean if you're incredibly well heeled (talking never worked a day in your life, the trust fund is bringing in tens of millions a month and you have "staff" for mundane things like buying cars) Rolls Royce has you pretty much covered.

The problem is the luxury manufacturers went high volume so for example Bentley is pretty much everywhere. Same with Mercedes etc. Roll back the clock 40 years that simply wasn't the case.

When my mates Dad got a Merc in 1982 we were like ooh! You saw them around but they weren't common place (suburban London).

Fast forward 40 years every other car is prestige(?) German. I suppose its a case of when everything's posh, nothing is (except the extreme end of the market).

Maybach, Phantom, Mulsanne - are they really on the same level as, say, a MB W100 600, a Silver Shadow or a DS420 in the old days?

Indeed.... the local Waitrose is always an interesting car park to see tastes changing.... the Range Rover which was the uniform of choice now appears to be being replaced by Tesla (really virtue signalling) and Audi E-tron (virtue signalling with nice interior)

Range rovers, jag XJs are getting less (XJs no more) the odd massive Bentley SUV too.

Shame as I like a big comfy discrete saloon but very much in the minority.

The Phantom is, not the Maybach or the Bentley

Maybe they've all gone under the radar.

Given the ready willingness of certain groups of society to smash other peoples stuff up because they can then I'd be leaving the posh car at home and driving a nondescript older Eurobox instead for most of the time.

Quite, was out in the new flying spur the other day, not what you’d expect though.

New S class is only just out, plus the new luxury EV from mercedes is out on the 15th april.

Ok but would a "dignitary", as opposed to a premier league footballer, a foreign oligarch or corner shop/scrap metal industrialist from north England, really drive a Phantom? Or the (nice) 7 series in a frock, Ghost?

If you're properly posh, and understated British, you don't care about showing off. You don't need to.

Back in the day they bought posh cars because they were comfier and more refined than cheap cars.

Nowadays pretty much all mid-range and above cars are comfy, quiet etc, so why bother spending more.

A "dignitary" is someone deemed to be important due to attainment of high office, usually public. In this country they will be salaried and not wealthy and may well not be particularly posh either.

If you mean inherited wealth/trust fund babies, vs. people that have earned their wealth (which you seem to have some disdain for), its likely to be the latter rather than the former. However, I rather think there will be more hedge fund managers buying a new Phantom rather than someone who owns a collection of corner shops.

You honestly think that's why people buy them? It isn't.

He either looks very small or Bentley have launched another gargantuan oil tanker.
