The Mercedes bars, atera aero bars and (I think) Thule bars all have a T track for securing the box.
T shaped pieces are slid into the track and then the box drops over them, a nut or hand wheel is then secured inside the box.
The alternative and more basic method of securing boxes to bars is with large U bolts.

T track:

U bolts:
My Thule box has what I can only describe as a spider type clamp where you sit the box on the rails, fit the clamps over the bars from the inside of the roof box and then turn a wheel to tighten them up.

Even with the aero bars the box baffles like hell at high speed, my autoroute progress was limited to 140kph ish due to noise.
I have the spider type clamps in my Thule box too. But I can take them out and use the T track as well. The box can be opened from both sides.

I've got it currently set up with some old Whispabars (they've been renamed/rebranded and I can't remember the new name) that used to be on an X5 but seem to work on my S210 fine.
We cruised on the autoroute to and from Le Dawlish this summer, at 135-160kph (ish) with acceptable noise and fuel economy levels.
Mondayo, if that's your W210, I love it, beautiful car, I have one but not in that condition, ours has been abused since I got it new, in my opinion, the S210 is the best estate car ever. Much nicer than a 211 and much better built, just the rust really. Massive load space, bigger than anything else, the 211 is much smaller and nowhere near as elegant. I've no idea what Benz were thinking when they came up with the rear end & the rear 3/4 view on a S211, no idea why I bought one too after already having the 210. It might be that they're known as a funeral car because there's so many 211's leading the dead on their final journey! I'll take a 210 please.

My OEM one is handsome and works well. Impacts the fuel economy and whistles at speed (over the ton) but nothing like the 'horror' stories described.

See I love integrated solutions where you can open all the doors, the tailgate and the roof box on the remote biggrin

a FB marlketplace jag - not far for me (well relatively speaking) - i know nothing about jags............

2008 Jaguar X-TYPE
£4,000

Jaguar x type sport premium Pearl grey

Low mileage, excellent condition inside and out. Top spec, leather heated memory seats, satnav, electric folding mirrors, cruise, climate. We'll maintained, full service history, loads of receipts, two keys, three owners from new. MOT'd till May 2022
I ran a facelift X-Type for four years, same engine as this but auto. It wasn't a bad car but it wasn't a good Jaguar. Almost all of the issues I had with it were diesel specific. It used to lunch EGR valves, too. Turbo went, injectors went, DPF, blah blah.

I loved it, but it dissolved in the end. Looked nice, though:

I wouldn't pay more than £1200 for one now.
I paid £900 for mine in 2013, 2.5 V6 petrol - decent spec, piano black dash, leather seats, AC, heated seats stuck a facelift grill and alloys on it and did 70k miles in 4 years. Cost very little apart from service bits and a recon fuel pump was on 170k miles when I sold it. I believe it ended up a pile of shredded steel somewhere.

I previously owned a late 90's. XJ Sport and thought the interior was fairly well screwed together, lots of Ford switches and buttons and a lot of service bits were Ford with a Jaguar stickers and Jag prices. A fuel pump for example was £600 from Jag but a Ford unit was less than half. A mechanic friend of mine ran one for 8 years with a modified Ford KA pump.

It wasn't a Jaguar but I liked the styling

Just run in then. LWB and proper tyres. Obviously you’ll need to paint it Berlin Taxi Yellow.

Awesome. I was tempted. Those wheels, the shabby bodywork and the CEO plate are a great look.

I think I've only ever come across Macron to rival me for the level of vitriol I express towards diesels.

Utterly digusting, disgraceful engines.
