Is the £99 pay at pump limit going up any time soon?

Today as the pump slowed to a crawl then clicked off at £99 with nearly 20 litres of tank still empty I was contemplating whether I would leave it there or do a second round. I don't have many miles to do in the near future and there was a queue so i opted to leave with my car wondering why it was still thirsty.

Even now, a lot of new cars have 60+ litre tanks and pretty much everything Mondeo-sized and larger used to come with a tank of 60-100 litres (I bet people here can name cars with even bigger tank options). With petrol now around £1.40-1.60 a litre depending on locale and grade that £99 often isn't enough to fill a fuel tank.

Does anyone know if any garages/chains have already raised the limit, or if they have plans to?

If you use the esso app to pay at the pump at esso stations you can set the 'reserved payment' limit to what you require on a scale up to £140.

Well I can confirm that it is a programmable option. It's up to the retailer and the card companies.

With an 84.5 litre tank this isnt the first time ive had thus problem.

I usually fill up when im down to 1/4 full. If i forget i check out the kiosk queue. If there is no queue i pay inside , if there is i just use 2 cards and fill up twice.

I’m amazed they don’t do it like America or if you want to use the HGV pump to fill up a truck ,with pre authorisation for the payment especially now it’s so ridiculously expensive ..
If you’re in business a fuel card is very handy
Easy to keep track of spending and set price so it doesn’t matter where you fill up .

I seldom let my car get empty enough to need that much, but if it were truly empty would tip the £100 mark, and that's on a Jag S-Type. I must admit I've been using the TDI Golf shed more and more.

Don't get me wrong, it's hardly life-or-death if I have to drive away without a full tank or pop my card in again for a second fill, but as I don't really enjoy going to petrol stations I generally want to fill up as infrequently as I can (whilst still enjoying the car - so no hypermile stuff).

I don't think it's a worry for me. I have a nearby Costco where prices are in the 140's for both petrol and diesel. I have a max tank capacity of 62 litres, a 50L, 45L and a 13L tank. Even the 62L tank at 150p would be £93 at the very most. Not that I run my cars down to empty then brim them all the way up, either. Fuel light on (or in the reserve block) then guesstimate half a tank (full for the 13L bike, I'm not that stingy).
