Mercedes-AMG A45 gets the Edition 55 treatment

CLA45 gets the birthday bumps, too - and we're not even halfway through the year yet

Best get used to this, folks. This year marks 55 years since the creation of AMG, and nobody is going to forget about it in a hurry, because here are another two ‘Edition 55’ models from Affalterbach. The new A45 and CLA45 follow the A35, the G63, the CLA35 and whatever else we’ve forgotten about in the series. Even Mercedes’ press release can’t help but acknowledge the fact: “yet more special models in the compact class” is the opening line.

This pair follow the template laid out by the previous Edition 55s, with the focus on cosmetic enhancement more than mechanical upgrades. Still, nobody who’s spent anytime behind the wheel of either frenetic ’45 flagship will want for more performance. The changes here include a couple of new paint shades - Cosmos Black or Digital White - an AMG decal set and the smart 19-inch cross-spoke wheels.

Also bundle into the Edition 55 pack are the AMG Aero Package as well as both AMG Night Packages, because what’s a small AMG without those. The former adds the larger front splitter with flics, the rear wing and diffuser, with the Night Packages ensuring that any external surface that isn’t already Cosmos Black is painted high gloss black. So that’s exhaust pipes, badges, window surrounds, mirror housings - everything. The only thing not black is the silver chrome AMG fuel filler cap, and that’s behind the flap anyway.

Mercifully there’s some respite inside, with the AMG Performance seats upholstered in red and black leather as well as some ‘Edition 55’ accents embroidered in red. Dark brushed aluminium trim is also standard, as is an Alcantara wheel.

Not sold just yet? Get this: every Edition 55 A45 and CLA45 will get an AMG indoor car cover. Naturally, it’s pretty swish: “With its breathable outer panelling made of tear-resistant synthetic fibre fabric and antistatic inner fabric made of flannel, it protects the vehicle in the garage from dust and scratches”, says the press release. Nice.

Available as an equipment package on the S models of both cars, the price in Germany is 12,614 euros for the A45 or 14,280 euros for the CLA45. We’re awaiting confirmation of UK availability, although by that point another Edition 55 will probably have been launched…

I do not recall anything much for 50 years of AMG, now they are doing 55; seems like they are trying to steal BMW's thunder of 50 years of M.

I’d prefer a 30 year Hammer celebration

Looks ok from the outside but interior is a bit Mansory for my taste.

The lack of any base prices above prompted me to look it up. MB UK lists the A45 S 4Matic + Plus (all those plusses) for £58725. Apparently I wouldn't be much good when being interrogated by Ted Rogers, as I expected low £40k's. Add the extras, then the 55 package... £80k+?

But I only clicked through to laugh at it.

Snore snore, another re-badging for cash exercise.
But the fan boys will obviously be lining up at "there dealer" with pen in hand ready to hire it for the next 3 years.

Apparently there is a sucker born every minute hahaha

I was wondering why my local interior had sold out of chrome interior trim.

Those side decals are suitably tasteless.

I’m really not a fan of the interior of these, particularly the nasty chintzy silver. Yuck all round for me.

They use RS which is I guess their equivalent, but to their credit an RS model is always an RS, cant get an RS Line or similar, or a dressed up C220D "AMG"

I quite like this though, not sure why its 12 grand extra but hey ho, not a bad looking car, could lose the decals though.

I think that 12,500 euros for a new A45 is very good value.

Is it just me or does no one else give a care either? Why are they still releasing planet destroying petrol cars? Haven’t they heard? Something about emissions, cost of fuel, CO2? Maybe the message hasn’t hit Germany yet?

Is it a BMW?
No.
Nah it's not for me then...it's crap. laugh

Seriously though, I don't know why we needed this feature when we had the A45 one a couple of weeks ago and it stated that the CLA was getting the same 'Edition 55' treatment.
In fact the same headline is being used.

Thought the car industry was on its knees through lack of demand from people on real world salaries that could afford a £60-£70 K PCP finance deal.
Even the stay at home with mummy and daddy generation are shying away from these big ticket PCP deals according to a friend on BMW sales. There’s been a huge drop off in £50k ++ cars generally due to cost of living crisis and other factors. Perhaps Joe Achilles needs to live in the salaries of the real world outside of the South East.
Many hot hatch owners seem to be holding onto older cars from what I’ve noticed especially outside London and generally there’s a lot less new hatches.
Unlike the days of the MK7 Golf GTI / R I’ve seen hardly any MK8R’s or S3’s and it’s all reflected
In price and supply issues and lack of appetite for signing up for £50k finance.
