Estate in blue would be my perfect shed to keep miles off the pride and joy. Then again that only does 4k miles a year so its a pretty hard sell to the mrs.

I have a nasty feeling that the underbody corrosion may limit the economic life of this (otherwise quite nice) ST220 to another year.

Fixing the exhaust and suspension bits etc is almost certainly well within the abilities of the average weekend Pistonhead mechanics. However, if it's got rot under the sill covers etc, and places that a picky MoT tester knows where to look it could be the end of the story in 6 months' time.

What a fantastic shed, always fancied one of these and at this price, it seems like a rather good purchase. A ton of TLC and standard repairs would see it hold it's value rather well I would have thought. I know it would be better with the modifications mentioned, but it's not really worth spending that kind of money on it.

Would love to buy it, but I already have a car that cripples me at the petrol station as it is!

Always like these, and the ST24 before that.

Never owned one, but enquired about an ST24 when they were new. I was early 20's and clearly the dealer didn't consider me a serious buyer, and never got back to me with the figures.

I do like V6 engine cars.
A family member had an ST24 as a company car back in the day which they really liked. Seemed pretty brisk at the time.

Photo literally shows 105,005 miles.
Oh right, well now I know it's done 1005 miles more than I thought, I'm out.
Just pointing out the accuracy, you'd have thought that Shed would have looked at the photos while he was building the article.

However, if you're in the market for this sort of car then I don't think you need to walk away from it, at this end of the market compromises are very likely required. But you do you.

Are you really suggesting that something that does 28mpg comes under the category of "something that cripples you at the petrol station"?!!

Based on my experience, an ST220 wouldn't do 28mpg if it was being towed! I replaced mine with an impreza WRX wagon that was a lot more fuel efficient.

I too had an ST TDCI of this era (in fact, I think mine was an 05 too) and it was one of the best cars I've ever had. Economical, quick enough for a diesel but loads of space and dead comfy on long runs. Look at 220s every now and then - panther black hatchback with the red Recaro interior would be my choice. The only downside was that it felt REALLY poorly built compared to the mk2 Octavia VRS I replaced it with (which in turn felt poor vs the BMW I replaced that with).

I'd still have another.

Have had my 220 2yrs now and done just over 9000 miles, now at 144k.

Changed the oil and air filter this morning, made a note and noticed its not cost me a lot, some oil and filters a couple of mots, and one water pump ( that I knew needed doing when buying it )

Oh done both rocker gaskets and sump, but still leaks oil!

Its serving me and family duties well, sub 20mpg avg, but back in 2015 ish it had a lpg conversion, that works, and have run it on that 95% of the time.

And it has the red recaros 👍

It'll drive very nicely, it will probably be pretty reliable and durable mechanically, but it sounds like it's about to enter the typical older Ford era of needing to be attacked with a MIG welder come every MOT, in a long and ultimately futile battle with tin worm.

These really do handle nicely though. I drove one years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, although the engine, for all its decent noise seemed a bit limp.

If you can stomach mid 20s to the gallon and £350 VED, why not?

I had the red interior in mine and loved. It did however become affectionately known as "the brothel" though laugh

Ok I suppose but hard to justify thirst for the performance on offer. If it was a V8 then fine.

Also any old Mercedes with the OM642 3.0 CDI from the era have standard 221PS, and £150 tuning box on eBay is more like 270PS, and probably double the fuel economy of this thing. If you want a performance shed, that's where I would look (black pump caveats apply).

Indeed, I also own a WRX and it says it will do something like 29mpg, but that is near impossible even if you keep it under 2500rpm and drive like you have an egg under your foot. The ST will be just the same and not worth owning if you are going to make the effort to try to get it to 28mpg, but I am sure that figure is a bit mythical anyway!

So I stand by my point, it will be costly on fuel and at the pumps regularly.

I impulsively bought one of these for under a grand a few years ago, fixed the issues and sold for a small profit.

I didn’t live with it for long, a few weeks total, but my impressions.

They still handle/steer so well for a fairly big car.

Makes a great noise

Isn’t actually that fast, certainly by modern standards. You really have to extract performance from them, rather than just putting your foot down.

History of the engine development is pretty interesting!

I don't recall my ST24/V6 Ghia X getting anywhere near 28mpg either. These engines are from an era where they got through fuel very fast I reckon.

Now now, don't let facts and figures get in the way of bashing a non-premium brand. Next you'll be pointing out the Mondeo has 5-series interior space too biggrin

Most of my cars have been RWD but TBH most if not all manufacturers have made them so benign and understeer-prone that you may as well be in an FWD unless you want to deliberately kick the back end out (and let's be honest, most people never do that, and the rest of us do it occasionally for sts and giggles only).

I did like the ST220, it was pretty epic for its time and was even relatively good on fuel Vs the similarly nippy Vectra 2.8T.
