160bhp for a 30-year-old car was unheard of back then. If I remember rightly, they were good for 135+ and 0-60 in the very low sevens. Again, one of the quickest hot hatches at the time.
It was a really strong number for the time, although from memory the R21 Turbo was north of 170hpirish boy said:
I think they are absolutely fantastic looking. Seen plenty of diesel ones in my youth but don’t think I’ve ever seen a gti or 16v.
I had the 8v 19GTi.On an ‘H’ plate.
Great car. That was the one with the ‘Thunderbird 2’ style spoiler.
Big electric sunroof, lovely seats and some typically quirky French controls.
I was seeing a girl who owned a horse and you could raise the suspension (on the car; not the girl or horse) to drive across bumpy fields.
In two years I think it needed a new part for exhaust rear - fell off - and had a small leak from the hydroneumatics.
Loved it. Was replaced by an MR2 (mk1) T-Bar in white. What a great time for cars!
I had both 8V and 16V versions in the 90s - mechanically they were very reliable, though nowhere near as solid as a CX or XM.
The 16V engine was quite exotic, with a cylinder head closely related to the 205 T16 WRC car. The 16V wasn't much quicker in normal driving than the 8V GTi, but it seriously pulled with a few revs on board. Not the most refined drivetrain, but effective.
I always thought BXs were underrated - lovely fluid chassis, very wieldy, composed and comfortable.

One of my earliest memories is being sat in the back of my Grandads BX on a roundabout near Maidenhead about 300 yards from his house when the steering (?) went on it. My dad drove over in his Frontera (peake 90s!) to tow us home. Also having to wait a few seconds for the air suspension to raise when starting.
Remember a colleague having the same model and colour and loving the passenger trips for the lunchtime pub visits from work (those were the days!).
We used to park on a raised up sort of plinth in the carpark where a building used to be - short sharp incline but any car could do it really. One day his refused to start on one of those lunchtimes and he called out breakdown, couldn't get it started and it was on its haunches on this damn raised plinth - couldnt tow the car off as not enough ground clearance, couldn't start it to create ground clearance. We watched from the office as the buildings maintenance chap gave them bits of wood to try and 'flatten' out the slope - took them a couple of hours to move the thing.

I had a GTi in the early 1990’s. Bit of an oddball choice for a 18/19 year old me but a lad from work had one & I really liked it. Plus the fact that they were relatively cheap to insure for what they were. I remember it costing me £808 fully comp !!
I drove the car to Cornwall a few times from Yorkshire & it never missed a beat, the only issues it had was a faulty abs sensor & the sunroof become stuck. Both easy fixes.
Prior to the BX I had a MG Metro which was crap quite honestly so this thing felt like quite a leap, I remember it giving my mates Cavalier SRi a run for its money & another pals Nova SR got mullered by the French fancy.
F567 OFA was the reg, according to DVLA it hasn’t been on the road since 2000.

Early 90s as well. I must have been 22 or 23.I drove the car to Cornwall a few times from Yorkshire & it never missed a beat, the only issues it had was a faulty abs sensor & the sunroof become stuck. Both easy fixes.

There's an almost as rare/ever rarer (?) BX GTi 4x4 for sale here. I've seen it in the flesh. It's fantastic! https://www.retro-sect.co.uk/product/1990-citroen-...

That looks fantastic, I had no idea they did a 4x4. Lovely colour and wheels as well. MoT history a bit worrying though.Edited by Stroudy1 on Tuesday 23 July 08:20

i was at the goodwood festival of speed recently and there was the most pristine example on lord Marchs lawn
it did not look out of place with all of the lamborghinis / Paganis etc
superb !!
I'll bet. A BX GTI 16 Valve is far more interesting to me than unattainable exotica. I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way either.it did not look out of place with all of the lamborghinis / Paganis etc

Reminds me of the You tube BX, the tomato. Started off with Number 27, then went to Jayemm on cars and finally the Citroen fanatic UpNdown where I believe it caused him a fair bit of bother! But what a great car and from memory, it still made its book power when put on his rolling road.
