I believe this 5,5 liter engine variant is pretty much bomb proof? I have the non turbo version in my ML 55 and had no trouble over the years.

That is a dream car and does not seem crazily expensive either. Love it.
That's a different engine. Yours is a m113, so same as the c55/clk55 and with a supercharger for the e55/s55/g55. They are pretty reliable old things
This is a m157. Again pretty good but there are a few foibles as with all current (ish) performance engines.

Awesome machine, it’s aged well to my eyes. Get one while you can.

Does anyone else wonder.. if the engine builders whose name goes on these AMG engines ever look through used car adverts, just to see one of theirs?

I mean in a nice way, not a ‘wow that’s the one where I couldn’t remember if I had torqued down that last main cap properly’ way.

Looks tempting, but the usual Mercedes issues of fragility and unreliability put me off.

I don't recall Harry F having many issues with it while he had it.

I'm still dailying a 2010 Merc E Class. The only major unexpected expense in seven years has been a bi-Xenon headlamp unit that failed last year; but all modern multi-function headlamps cost an arm and a leg so that's not really a Merc thing.

An estate but with less room and practicality. Why?

Ohh my that is lovely, I am in the market for a barge type thing, a modified Fiesta ST is conducive to long distances, i.e. those over about 3 miles so want a wafter, can then properly ruin the Fiesta as a track car.

Trouble is, buying it is one thing, running it quite another, my dads neighbour got an E63 a year or so ago and that went away for a month or more after purchase to sort various (very expensive) issues, luckily bought from a dealer who took it on the chin.

Then you get into the fact its for longer journeys, but is likely very thirsty, its also probably faster than I ever need. Then you think you only live once and end up flip flopping between the perfectly adequate diesel model and the ridiculous 500/600 bhp petrol monsters. I had a 5.5 variant of the earlier CLS, nearly replaced it with a CLS 55 but decided faster wasnt really what it needed.

Only thing I had to do was replace the fuel lines for some surface corrosion - i just had the lot done for peace of mind. Clutch, brakes and tyres were consumables - i thought I had an issue with the gearbox as it would sometimes stall when pulling away, but that was the worn MCT clutch. Servicing at an AMG specialist was reasonable. Insurance was about half that of an RS6 as these don't get nicked.

Fuel and tax were high, obviously!

This was from a great Mercedes era after the bad days of the 2000s, and before the plasticky days of today. Even the air vents and electric seat buttons are machined aluminium. My current SQ7 feels low rent inside compared to the CLS.

They arent actually, they are chrome covered plastic (I had a CLS63 for 3 years). and managed to scratch off some of the chrome by accident.

Thing to note on these, the early models (pre 2013) can suffer from stretched timing chain issues. This was fixed in later models.

no its a completely different engine.
the ML55 had a the M113 5.4
This CLS63 has a the M157 5.5 Bi turbo V8 which is decent but the most problematic of AMG V8s. Wiring harness leaks at the rear of engine, cam timing phaser issues, bore score and coolant leaks can be more common this engine.

The only Merc I really desired. Still looks great in my eyes although the facelift looked even better. I’d only get one with the LSD though like this one has otherwise GOODNIGHT IRENE!

I'm pretty sure mine were ally, but it did have some sort of luxury extended leather and interior pack...happy to be corrected!

That looks rather nice. Always had a soft spot for these.
Perfect colour combo, particularly the interior. Price a little punchy for age, I’m sure a little negotiation could resolve that.
Please someone buy this, I do not have the space but the desire is strong……..

Always really liked these, I think it's an epic proposition and a fair price for what it is. As said above, buying one is one thing, but you need to have a healthy fund for possible issues running a top of the range luxury Merc with a 5.5 V8 twin turbo.

This is the problem with anything like this - it's wonderful insanity. I moved from a 260bhp XJ8 to a 435bhp Audi S6 (with the V10), and compared to the Jag, it's just so much more car/engine/performance than you need in most situations. I flip-flop from grinning every time I start it up or see the little "V10" badges down the side, to grimacing every time I'm stuck in a jam or crawling at 60 in heavy motorwaytraffic and might as well be in a 2.0 TDI.

This is a good debate. I had four, 2x 63s and 2x Derv pre and post facelift for both. Looking back at photos, I am certain the centre air vents were metal and the door mounted seat adjustments were plastic with a chrome plating.

Points for both.

Later 5.5 is bulletproof and IMO the best modern AMG V8.

Never liked the design when it was first released, especially compared to the first gen CLS, but they have aged nicely and I rather like the looks now.

I never gelled with mine, lost a horrific amount of money on it...it was actually the car that cured me of my car addiction!

A couple of years after selling that, I took on my fathers old Bentley Continental Flying Spur and that was a far far better car all around. But the ludicrous £700 RFL a year for a second car that didn't travel much and increasing insurance premiums saw me sell that just recently.

I stick to motorbikes now smile
