R8 or M3 for me, Cayman seems strong money unless I'm missing something...

The R8 has aged really well.

A new one is not so different to a 2007 one proving Audi got it right first time. Future classic there.

£14k for a near 100k French hatch back seems bonkers. When did they become so expensive?!

Always thought the M3 was overrated.

Clio for me.
I was disappointed the first time I drove the E46 M3 as well, and I think my expectations were a bit too high for it in fairness.

I've been a passenger in a Clio Trophy, and I was genuinely blown away with how well it handled, and I'm not really a FWD fan either. I rated it very highly for sure.

I generally don't associate Audis as great drivers cars, however there is definitely something about the R8 that always draws me in though. The engine is very appealing, and I'd enjoy using the gated manual as well I'd imagine too. They seem like a lot of car for the money as you both say I reckon.

Love the e46 m3. Favourite m3 we ever had out of 3 generations - keep looking for another but don’t have the space or use case.
Also really like the r8. BiL’s BiL dailied one for 2 years no problems during that time, still was low miles and got back not far from purchase price at sale time. Difficulty parking it (width and visibility) and limited practicality meant he couldn’t justify keeping it.
Nephew swears by Renaults and has had several really regrets moving on from them. The Clio is pricy but I think they will hold.

They were an absolute bargain for ages as you say, and at one stage I couldn't understand why they were so cheap for what was a very highly rated car to be honest. Obviously that seems to have changed now though.

Agreed. The prices of all of these '00 legends' has certainly increased recently - as most you cannot buy an equivalent new version of. I wonder if the prices will keep climbing..?

V12 or not, why buy a DB9 over a similar age V8 Vantage? All V8s were manual back then, better looking and more fun to drive.

Surprisingly enough I’d pick the Monaro, especially in that lovely Impulse blue. Yes they are crude and dated but hells bells when you push one to its limit you get a real workout that’s for sure.
One final thought to consider, if you do get it wrong there’s no nanny electronics to save you….you’re on your own yikes

It was and still is regarded as on of the best hot hatches and FWD cars. Compare this price with Fords like RS Turbos, and it seems very reasonable.

It’s hard to make a case against any of them, a stonking list but I’d take the DB9 even if it just sat on my drive for me to stare at, it’s an achingly good looking piece of design

Hadn't realised they had become that much of a bargain. Looks like amazing value for money to me.

Nothing says value like a 20 year old Clio for £13,250. Or a DB9 for £40,500 when you can have one for half as much. Absolute nonsense.

Clearly the author does not understand the concept of value for money.

Loved my Clio 182 even though it was only "standard" and as per the article I think they still look good today.

Toyed with the idea of upgrading my E36 Evo for an E46 but in the end decided to keep the E36 ( which I still have).. Think that might have been a mistake given the love that a lot of people have for the E46.
