I know how it "should" go. Read it all on DVLA website. But...

How does it actually go?
Anyone have any horror stories or advice?

It's a 50cc Chinese imported brand new moped and has the CoC which I will collect with the bike.
What other paperwork do I need to get from the seller?

Any tips very welcome or just share your experiences.
Ta!

Should just need the CoC and a cheque.

You'll get the form at your local DVLA office.

Pretty straight forward, or at least it was when i last did it a couple of years ago with an imported Clio 197.

It's been years since I did this but I think you need to complete a V55/5 & supply valid insurance in the chassis number to register in this country. As far as I know they then do a check on the machine with Interpol to ensure it is not stolen from elsewhere in the world and when that is finally complete they will send you a tax disc with a reg number on it.

Of course things may have changed in the 10 odd years since I did imported bikes.

There's the first problem!!! A cheque? I've not had a chequebook for about 5 years hehe
Can I pay cash?

Is it the V55/4 you're talking about?

Any recommendations for insurance as I hear (maybe incorrectly) that some places won't insure with just VIN number.

You'll need a V55/4 for manual registration along with the CoC and payment (I think the DVLA will take everything bar Amex and milk tokens TBH)

You can call the Insurance Brokers Association who'll advise you who'll provide a cover note on a VIN only.

Unless you have a trade policy which should allow you to register it without showing the VIN.

It is a bit of a PITA to be honest.

Just to "close" this:

Got the bike complete with a V55/1 from the trader. (He shouldn't have given me that though, they're for trade use only)
Took what I had, the V55/1, to DVLA local office in Trafford, Manchester.

Given the correct form (V55/4) to transfer the details onto and within 45 minutes was walking out with a tax disc, a Certificate of Entitlement (and a "MX10" number assigned) and a receipt for £70.

Simple process and I went for my first ride on The Beast today hehe:
Thanks for the advice!

Do you any of know how to register a scooter that has never been registered before and has no documents with it only a receipt and manual? I have tried to get the certificate of conformity but have been told that it can’t be sent to me.
