Main dealers going to the wall?

Noticed that there are many main dealers/franchises that are simply closing down.

I guess times are tough but equally I never quite understood how enough cars were sold to justify 2 main dealer franchises 7-8 miles apart in some of the local towns.

So, recession and lack of punters buying cars, or manufacturers looking to consolidate - many seem to be moving towards these "mega sites"?
