Been meaning to update my Readers Cars thread for ages, been about a year since the last post, but the car was looking extra nice after a quick wash the other day and thought this thread might appreciate it.

I can confirm, now thats it properly run in, that a 3.7L conversion feels quite a bit punchier than a standard car.... smile

As we're merely a handful of posts away from this thread breaching 10k posts, I thought i'd thank all those that have contributed over the last five years.

The interest and popularity in the 'early' 996 (all 996 Carrera, of course!) continues to grow and with many more cars finding home with enthusiast owners I imagine we can expect this to continue for some time to come.

This thread is personally my first 'go-to' on PH, always read with interest and I wish to add more to this group, be it sharing more about my own car/experiences, helping others with repair, upgrades or buying advice or perhaps attending our very own PH meet?

Cheers all!
agree...... as the originator of this post... i cant help but pop in here every time i browse the forums..... such a fab resource from a solid bunch of Porsche... and esp 996 fans.

keep it up guys !!!

What cars you got now?
I ended up buying a guards red 997.2, i missed out on a couple of guards 996 aero kitted cars, then when they started to increase in price... the 997.2 started to be justifiable at the time.... i loved it - and will never forget the experience of driving my first 911 having yearned for one for so long.

a mate then asked me if i was interested in selling ~Christmas time 2020... which planted the seed, i always thought a 997 GT3 would be the natural next step for me.. or a GT4, and after some soul searching and man maths.... a 991.1 GT3 appeared in my local OPC with 3k miles.......... in Guards Red, so the deal was done - have had that coming up 2 years this Feb and absolutely adore it. so from looking at what were 13-15K cars 5 years ago things have escalated somewhat !!

I run a supercharged Exige S2 alongside it (purchase this summer) and a Caterham superlight that i bought back in 2019 which i use more for circuit racing... albeit is road legal.

I've absolutely no plans to sell the GT3 and adore every inch of it... and the noise (the only thing the 997.2 lacked for me) is just the most addictive thing in the world..... don't think i could ever get bored of chasing the 9k limit on it !!

That black (ex marky car) will arguably be as good an early 996 aero car there will be.

I was super close to buying this way back then, I knew it was going to be the best of anything available, but in the end I personally had to wait for my guards red car.

Fab car for someone…. Albeit unsure what £ is on it

Standard 3.4 engine didn't last long after purchase. Details on p490 of the thread.

TL;DR - it developed a taping sound after a few laps of the 'ring. That turned out to be the bore scoring you see above. As it needs a full rebuild anyway, I'm going for a 3.7L conversion.

(I've edited the post so it makes a bit more sense smile )

superb car that one... i SO nearly bought that back in 2019, but stumbled as i just knew i 'needed' guards red. i doubt there are many aero kitted 996 out there better than this one.
