Hi all,

I am finally in the position of being able to fulfil a lifelong dream of purchasing a 911. I have a deposit down on a Carrera S 992, but instead of being excited, my overwhelming emotion is anxiety at my home being subjected to an aggravated burglary.

I live in Birmingham which is a bit of a hotbed for theft at the moment, with videos daily on community FB groups of thieves stealing cars from drives remotely.

I know the 992 isn't a keyless entry car, and we use steering wheel locks on our cars overnight, but these solutions almost make the situation worse as any theft will need to become aggravated and I'm nervous for my wife and daughters at being subjected to something like that.

I know Audi's and BMW's are highly sought after for parts reselling, but is anyone able to provide any insight into the theft stats/likelihood for the 992's in the UK?

It's such a shame to be made to feel this way over something you've worked so hard for.

Porsche is nowhere near the highest targeted make for theft, but I there may be a perception of higher risk.
Feeling safe can be as important as being safe, especially when it comes to your nearest and dearest (I'm talking family, not motors..)

Put your details in this link to see what your local figures are like

When it comes to car theft, like much other crime it can be bad luck- not bad choices which determines the victim.

Happy motoring.

Life's too short, especially if you have good insurance cover.
I have a GT3 that lives on my drive rather than being garaged. I have the PVTS+ tracker and a decent security camera.
I used to worry about it being stolen but now I just look forward to driving it instead.
If you're really worried you could always arrange for secure storage unless you're buying it as a daily.

Deterrents work well. Visible cameras. Install enough deterrent to incentivise the thieves to go elsewhere.

I was looking at the stats in the link you provided.

The M2 postcode had 3180 offences per 10,000 cars. yikes

M33 postcode had 33 offences per 10,000.

I really wouldn't let it worry you.
As you said, the majority of car key burglaries (certainly in my area) are for the keys too M Sport BMW's or Golf R's. I've not seen any 911's taken via a burglary, not to say they don't of course.

This is why we take precautions and have insurance.

Hire a garage near your house and keep it off premises and out of sight. Install an app enabled wifi camera system in the garage to keep an eye on it and get alerts on your phone. Fit a tracker.

If you aren’t going to daily it, stick it in one of those secure storage places like Windrush.

Have a look at the Ghost imoboliser - https://www.autowatch.co.uk/veh-sec/ghost-2-menu

Almost put one on my 340 for the same reason and seems very clever.

Honestly Porsches don't get stolen very often. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, range rovers, fast Ford's yes. These can all blend in, be cloned and used to commit crime. In comparison to those very few porsche get stolen. The ones that do tend to be air cooled old stuff which are probably stolen to be broken for parts or shipped out the country.

I'd be more concerned with a golf R than a porsche

Range Rover, golf R, Audi S3 maybe an issue if you live in the outer suburbs of Birmingham otherwise don't sweat it.

What does always amaze me though is the amount of pussies quite frankly on here who would prefer to put their car keys by their front door along with a friendly note saying “take the keys and please don’t hurt me” rather than having the backbone to actually fight for their possessions.

Anyway nothing that a tracker and a good gap / insurance policy can’t mitigate, and not a major issue with Porsche tbh.

Life's too short to worry, I mean its a nice car, but it is just a car.

If you let other people dictate how to live your life, its not going to be a very fulfilling life.

And again, it is just a car. Car's can be replaced but I can't remember the last time I heard of a Porsche being stolen.

If you really are that worried I would prioritise moving over the purchase of a car, but then would you worry abut being 'jacked' every time you drove it? If yes its clearly not going to be an enjoyable situation for you...no?

Get a disklok if you're worried about theft. Thieves will move on to easier targets.

Golf's are more risk as the parts are easier to move on.

Thats a whole other level of things. That is home invasion and could be argued as attempt to murder. I know low life are unpredictable but really, would that happen?

Google does indeed report it as not an isolated incident...

Ok, not isolated but the ratio must be for every 1,00,000 normal car thefts, 1 involves home invasion, GBH, hostage taking and attempted child murder.

i don't buy it, i think it is a ludicrous comment made, and i think the people who mention this are fear mongering.

I have always found Porsche insurance cheap in respect of its value , it’s cheap for a reason because you are less likely to have an accident and for the car to be stolen!
