Yes I think it would make sense. Question to any PDK owners on here that track their car regularly - has anyone fitted an additional oil cooler for the transmission or had overheating issues with a standard car?

Also, have any owners fitted uprated top mounts and control arms in order to get more camber for track use?
Currently run stock topmounts but RSS arms

Nice, quality items the RSS arms. What kind of camber front and rear can you get with these without different top mounts?

So all ready for a trip up and around the Scottish highlands with some friends, leaving tomorrow morning. I live in Hertfordshire so tomorrow is likely to be a c.650 mile day ended up with a blast across the part of the Cairngorms which is always stunning.
Is your car a peridot one? I was driving down the M74 heading to a friends down south and clocked an R heading northbound on the Friday morning. The colour stands out in the sun. smile

No issues at all on track in up to 32 degrees. I kept the stints to 15 laps or so. Less at Spa.

Hello all,

I'm potentially looking at replacing my K20 Elise track car with a Cayman R as I think I need something that's a bit easier to live with, especially on the long journeys to and from track days. I also have a modified 997.2 S which I used to use on track before the Elise which had the usual modifications that I'd also look to carry out on the R: GT3 shifter, GT3 master cylinder, larger discs, Pagid pads, HEL brake lines, track wheels, Cup 2s etc. The 911 is now my daily so I'd rather get another 2 seater and the Cayman would be ideal I think.
One question I do have is for PDK cars in case I go that route - do they need extra cooling for lots of track work? I think the PDK cars have the extra front radiator, but US guys also recommend an additional transmission oil cooler. Is this needed for UK temperatures or is it just due to the hotter temps in the US?

Thanks.
Hi Mutton,

I tracked a friends PDK R a lot a few years back. Never had any issues with PDK cooling. Only thing changed was GT3 master cylinder/ brake ducts and braded lines. We used to stay out and do a whole tank of fuel with no cooling issues. It was so good I bought a PDK car for myself.

Thinking of putting my PDK car on the market, if your interested drop me a PM for spec etc, mine hasn’t been tracked. J

Hi there Paul - Yep, that would have been me. We have a fantastic 4 days up there covering 1600 miles. Came back through the Borders, across to Kielder Forest and along some of the Evo testing roads.

R's just come alive on those roads and you realise just how capable they are.

Glad you enjoyed your trip and still enjoying my old R never disappointed or had one once of trouble or problems in all my years of ownership.
My CSS is almost as good when I use it.
Enjoy

I try my best to maintain it to the same high standards that you always did. Hence the temporary PPF that I put on it for trip. Covered all of the front end, mirror caps, wheel arches etc so comes back as good as new with no stone chips.

And it's still the same and didn't miss a beat the whole trip.

Just in case anyone not aware the 981 comes with this PDK cooler from the factory.

Thanks all for your input, much appreciated. Need to figure out what to do with the Elise..

I notice that the red stickered up car at Ashgood has popped up again on Autotrader, perhaps a sale that fell through? Shame it doesn't have the OE carbon buckets as even if I wanted to fit Recaro buckets like they have for track I would want to put the OE buckets in my 997.

Hi. FYI the chap that bought my old Cayman S was looking to sell which might be worth considering..

It was gen 1 but with rebuilt engine by PARR and loads of bits inc KW V3, GT3 master cylinder, stainless manifolds, LWFW, Wavetrac diff, Cobra Nogaros, Short shift etc etc..It was a cracking car and really nicely built. Would provide a lot of what an R offers but with a lot less outlay. You could add Giros and stick the MRN twin turbo kit on it for less than £10k and still be miles under R money

Not sure if it's still available and I have no association but he wasn't using it much which seems a shame. I can put in touch if of interest.

Link to my old advert here , ( just for reference so can't vouch for any subsequent changes )

https://www.caymanoc.com/forums/topic/2514-possibl...

Just thought worth mentioning but understand if you have your heart set on an R as they do look like lovely things..

My car became worthless this weekend biglaugh

Also took it on a biking trip. The daily has a sticking brake caliper so I had to make do with the Cayman. The car/bike combo gets some attention. An interesting discovery this weekend was that the AC is quite effective even with the windows open. I used to always put it off when I opened them, but forgot and was enjoying a cool car with the added noise with the windows down.

I like the look of this but no air con or PSE. I guess as an out and out track car it’s got a lot of nice bits in it.

This one doesn’t appear to be selling. I’m guessing the track focus is putting people off, or maybe it’s just the AC.

Wondered how compromised it is for just road use. Maybe some of the track stuff could be removed? If it had AC (yeah yeah weight saving I know) and the tat could be removed it would’ve sold I reckon.

"...but the Cayman R was probably a little more fun" - praise indeed when you're comparing with a GT3RS! The're pretty good these wee Cayman Rs, aren't they ? biggrin

The biggest change between an S and an R is the suspension. This one doesn't have R suspension. So the only "R" remaining is wheels, seats and spoiler, plus it's been a track car which is suggestive of a hard life and not everyone will want a cage and harness (though personally I'd love mine to have that). I can definitely see why that would be a hard sell at that price. To me the value in an R is it having the R bits and so this one will never be able to command the R premium as it has lost the core of what makes it an R. I bet it's a cracking thing to drive and the mods seem sensible choices, but I think that car appeals to a very small market. And yes, the warranty comment in the advert isn't the most confidence inspiring thing I've ever read.

That car appeared when I was looking and my thoughts echo those above - in a way it really appeals as I am fond of a track day, but the core essence of the R has been removed. I would like my R as standard as possible, really, as I see it as something of a future classic, and this just didn't tick that box. Same was true of the red one Ashgood had at the time, too.

That's really odd

There is no valid reason not to warranty the car

Does also make you think 'track car = over revs'.

I read it as we know someone will buy this and track it a lot and therefore we dont want to add a warranty as it could ruin our relationship with the warranty company.
