.......Porsche made the right call as the GTS was better for a TV series in Hawaii.....
No, Porsche made the wrong call - One that benefited Ferrari nicely!

(At no point did Porsche make their decision on the basis that the TV series would be better off with a Ferrari 308 GTS, instead of a Porsche 928)

Would the 928 have worked as well in Magnum PI as the 308 GTS did? - Probably not, but it wouldn't have hurt the popularity of the 928 at all, and would have all but guaranteed more sales.

When Miami Vice came along, Ferrari noted it's popularity, and after a couple of series, made sure they didn't make the same mistake that Porsche had made with Magnum PI.

Just as the 308 GTS turned out to fit in perfectly with the Hawaiian scenery, and the concept of Magnum PI, Ferrari realised that the Testarossa would fit in perfectly with the Miami scene at the time, and the whole "designer" concept of Miami Vice - It was the exact right car, at the exact right time, and a great piece of advertising for Ferrari.

With Magnum PI, Porsche got it wrong, and Ferrari got lucky by accident - Which paid great dividends for them.

With Miami Vice, Ferrari made sure they got it right - And it paid great dividends for them.

"Risky Business" was okay for the 928, but it has never had the popularity that Magnum PI and Miami Vice have enjoyed, and it never made the 928 into the sort of icon that the 308 GTS and Testarossa became.
