Went to look at a Mk1 Superleggera the other day. Like the car (more than LP570 sound). However, while it sounds AWESOME outside the car and despite the internal carbon fibre, its rather QUIET inside. When the salesman said to me "youre a rare breed, most people dont like the rawness driving" I'm thinking really ?! Its carpeted so it isnt AS raw (or as loud) as I remember my 360CS being. I'm not talking about exhaust noise here I'm talking about visceral engine whirrs and sounds.

To illustrate what I mean checkout these videos of ride in Countach vs. ride in Gallardo...
Countach - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8JRTMofbTE
Superleggera Mk1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv7eb44v5vk

...now I know these are 20 years apart and Gallardo will obviously have greater sound deadening not least from additional crash protection etc, but *aside from* backbox and exhaust changes (as its noisy enough outside), is there anyway I can BRING more of that visceral engine sound in? I cant afford a Miura or Countach (the dream) and its a weekend car so I want it to feel as special as possible and while the Superleggera is certainly a more special car than a standard Gallardo, I really want each drive to feel like an occasion (for me as well as people seeing and hearing it outside).

If I'm not mistaken there isnt a service "hatch" behind the seats like in some Ferraris (if there was this could be removed and replaced with a lighter weight version to let more noise in). Without going as drastic as removing carpets and sound deadening from the floor (which might hamper resale), what could I do? Is an exhaust mod the only option?

Are there any SL Mk1 owners on here that feel the same and have changed anything on their car to make it even more visceral, or do you weekend drivers think its enough (maybe I need to live with it to start appreciating it rather than expecting fireworks on a test drive?!)

I agree with the OP, the desire to have some noise and feeling inside the cabin. I guess it's a question of removing some insulation from the bulkhead, I doubt there is a hatch.

New car buyers are channelled down this thinking that quieter and easier to drive is better. As a result modern cars have lost their character and their soul.

op, the problem is as dang says everything is quieter... there is less mechanical noise from modern engines, unless you are at the upper end of the rev range, in which case the v10 mechanical noise is f1 like....

also, the market is now not for petrolheads... the car has to be quiet so can be a daiy driver etc.... speak to backdraft motorsport.. they do race Gallardo and may be able to advise....

and yes, there is defo a diff between the pre and post facelift engine noise due to introduction of direct injection and changes in the cylinder timing/sequence

As you say, the Gallardo is nosiy enough on the outside. If you just add exhaust, you won't hear much of the mechanicals. It will just be louder inside, not more 'mechanical' and will be over the top to others.
I once heard a MK1 SL in town with a very loud exhaust and it sounded ridiculous (to me). Mind you, the standard one probably looks and sounds ridiculous to most people...

A Countach on the other hand, is ridiculous, and you wouldn't expect anything less! It is very loud inside and out (although some still add more - again, too much for me). I have an original ANSA sports exhaust, and you can hear it coming streets away, and you are slightly deaf after a long journey! After a few miles, a well tuned Carb Countach sounds like not much else, and certainly like nothing modern.

The SL also sounds great, but mainly at the top of the revs, which is also too fast for most of the time. I'd say if you want to hear more of what's going on, without just adding loudness, you probably will need to strip out some soundproofing as you say( I don't know how), or do some customisation on rear hatch (which doesn't open), just leave the window open at lower speeds. TBH, it sounds good enough for me not to bother doing anything to it, Now you've mentioned it, I might look at the hatch though.

Having said all that, the best low speed sound I've had was from a Larini on a Maserati QP. Maybe something like that is available? Tuned rather than just loud.

Either way, the way tge SL is, is much better than the loud, synthetic pops and bangs that are getting programmed into fast cars now,

I'm going to look into the sound-proofing removal over the winter. Of course any mods will need to be reversible in order to preserve the value of the car. Only down-side is I may then need to replace the Larini....

Awesome!! It is the Clubsport system and as we said above, very loud from the outside but a bit muffled on the inside. The soundtrack is really fantastic - hairs up all over the body each time I drive it :-) especially the first time it goes over the sweet-spot around 3500-4000rpm....

Thanks...
Though that makes me want a manual box as much as a Larini!
