Mulling over my next purchase.

I've always had a soft spot for the MK1 SL but with a few around £115k (the Grey Ex Eric Clapton car) and with some nice LP560's with half the mileage in some cases, at £35-£40k less than the SL, is the SL worth that premium?

Appreciate the lower numbers and rarity aspect of the SL but can't get over a new LP560 with less miles and c£35k saving......

Any owned both or driven both care to let me know your thoughts on both?

I have an LP550-2 and I test drove an SL1 after about a year of ownership. My conclusion was:

1) the LP felt more powerful engine-wise and hence is quicker. The horsepower vs weight figures back this up.
2) the SL1 has a little less sound deadening so you hear and feel the engine more. A plus in my book.
3) the SL1 interior is a bit more special being alcantera and carbon, but isnt as durable if you drive the car a lot.
4) my LP is manual, which I do prefer over eGear. I couldnt rate the SL Gbox without a reference...

All in all, I didn't buy the SL because it wasn't sufficiently different to my 550-2. In fact less punch from the SL and I preferred the 2wd manual.

Thanks for the reply, much as I expected really!

I've seen an LP560 for under £80k but keep coming back to the SL1 but struggling to reconcile the extra £35k.

I owned my SL for nine years and never regretted it. If you like the LP560 they’re great cars but they’re not something I could personally get excited about - given the following of the Superleggera and how prices have barely changed in a decade I’m not alone! wink

The article below maybe useful if you want a comparison. If you want to go for the pre LP cars it may be best to get the cats replaced for peace of mind.

Thanks for that............interesting;

"More performance than the Superleggera for significantly less money and a better car where it really counts – on the road"

I know the SL is special................but it feels hard to consider spending an extra £35k or more on it over an LP560........

Expanding that logic, why not get an Audi R8? Cheaper to run too. Even look at a TT RS? hehe

Of course, if the values were closer it would be an easier decision for sure.

Just wondering if there were people who had bought one, discounting the other etc etc?

It's breaking my brain reconciling an '08 SL with 22k on the clock Vs an '09 560 with 10k on the clock and paying less for the newer car.

I'm going to try and get out and see a couple on Saturday!

But you have to pay more for a 360 CS than a 430 (or 458 for that matter)
And more for a 670 SV than an Aventador
Etc etc

Try to get a drive in both cars and see what you prefer. I had a similar choice when I was looking and most people tend to recommend the car they own smile

I don't think £35k is a huge premium to pay for one over an LP tbh

I'm still annoyed with myself for not buying the manual SL I was offered for a great price many years ago!

Does it make financial sense to consider it as an investment?

Whilst the more expensive car requires a larger outlay, if it holds that value and more in the duration you own the car, the actual cost of ownership is less

They aren't investment cars. Lovely lovely bits of kit, but investment they are not. I would have one again in a heartbeart and drive the nuts off it every time as that's what they are meant to be driven like, not polished and admired in the hope it might go up.

One thing to consider is use....

Pre lp cars do not make a good daily and hate town.... The lp doesn't struggle with town use....

The current MK1 sl owners love them, that's why they own them, so bias is inevitable.... Go drive them yourself, it's a personal thing.

Eg Harris didn't rate the sl, loved the lp560 when it came out

Isn’t this like comparing a 360 Challenge Stradale with a bog standard 430?

One is now worth three times the other, and the genuine enthusiasts all have the 360?

I never struggled with my own around town or on trips where it was used everyday. Stop start traffic is a pain with e-gear on any Gallardo but not a complete disaster when you follow some of the advice here. Snatchy CCBs make that more interesting but it’s all part of their charm.

I still have the email where you gushed over an orange SL! wink

Personal taste as you say...I’m not a massive fan of the things he enjoys but I doubt either of us care! biggrin

in all seriousness, you must be well-placed to compare lp vs superleggera...
