Why do I need to know how the Toyota HSD system works? How would that make me get more out of a Prius???
Knowing how your car works makes you a better driver, it helps you optimise how you drive to suit the car's characteristics.

Former Prius Plus and Gen4 Prius owner here. Never had a problem with either car. Only routine servicing and consumables.

A couple of things to suggest:
  • The Gen3 Prius (like this one) is targeted by thieves for theft of the catalytic convertor. If you buy a Gen3, get a cat lock. I believe that Toyota dealers can do this. They also give you a window sticker saying that the cat is locked. It's not a guarantee but it might be enough to make a thief move onto an easier target.
  • These cars can do high mileage with no issues. See if you can find a Gen4 Prius with higher miles at the same price. It's a much better car, and no problems with cat theft.
  • I am not aware of anything mechnical or electrical to look out for, on either Gen3 or Gen4. They seem to be bulletproof.

Only reporting my OWN experience. I got about 45 mpg . I wasn’t thrashing it as it was in Norway and at near £2 a litre , it was disappointing and expensive . I would have expected another 10 mpg at least with a diesel.
I wasn't discounting your own experience but challenging your general viewpoint that hybrids are a scam and owners all drive them super slowly.
I did own a PHEV and that managed 35 mpg over 2 years. Even worse if you factor in the cost of electricity.
Admittedly it was an SUV and we got it for BIK reasons and my wife’s commute was out of range, but it didn’t exactly do what it said on the tin.
