Go and test drive a F-Type V8S (convertible) with a switchable exhaust and you’ll find the boot is just fine smile

sitrep:

We went to see a TT roadster at a main dealer last weekend (the 45 not TTS); it had only 10 miles of fuel in it (wtf?) but the sales guy said it's OK, our test route isn't that long... so I didn't drive it (not that fussed) but Mrs D came back and said it was OK, the only thing being that there's not much storage space in the car (she's used to lobbing stuff on the back seat of the current S5 convertible).

SO. TT is now out. I had a sit in an RS3 they had in the showroom and only then realised the interior is more-or-less the same as the TT, so the gears switched to maybe getting an S3 convertible instead...

Then we went to try a M240i in the wrong colour (white) so it would rule that model in/out, not a question if we'd buy that actual car. Firstly, it was filthy - the rep said it had been out that morning so must have got dirty but the wheels were manky, so it was certainly not that day's grot. The sales guy who'd driven it in that morning had also left a pair of dirty shoes on the back seat, something the rep who was seeing us didn't spot when the car was brought round for us to look at - but then she did at least let us both go on the drive (her in the back) and we had a chance to drive the car on NSL dual carriageway for a bit.

On the way back from BMW, we stopped in the nearest Audi garage to look at an S3 cabrio they had, also in the wrong colour - and arranged to go back for a test drive. We repeated the same journey - down the dual carriageway, swapped places, poor sod rep squashed in the back.

Comparing the M240i and S3 is interesting - the BMW makes a better noise, it feels more responsive, it's got more of the hallmarks of a driver's car. The S3 interior is miles better than the BM's. Mrs D reasoned that if she wanted to drive something that made a load of noise or properly went like stink, there are other options - but for a day to day commuting / business use car, the S3 is a nicer place to be and she prefers it to the BMW.

So there we have it. Off to buy an S3 cab with the right spec, in the right colour.

Anyone want a used S5, 2 careful lady owners?
