Hi

First post.

Can anyone explain imported car VED rules, on older, cheap cars that were imported years ago, as in which to buy that have very low VED rates?

There seems to be a lot of misinformation on the internet and the rules keep changing so if anyone has any helpful info it would be much appreciated.

As far as I can tell, the lowest rate now is £150, but surely the rule that a vehicles tax band will not be changed once V5 is issued should apply?

Doesn't that mean that there are some older cars out there with zero VED and that should not be tested for CO2 emissions?

If you know, please share!

If an import is over ten years old then it's flat rate around £250 a year or £150 for smaller <1.5l engines.

I haven't imported a car under ten years old so have no idea about the CO2 rated VED calculations

The reason I ask is that I've been looking for medium to large estate car, mpv, suv, or even possibly a 4x4 for more than three years. Every diesel I've looked at requires a large amount of money spent on them, pump and injectors (£1500) DPF, DMF, those awful DSG and semi auto gearboxes all on there last legs. The amount of cars out there that have major faults pending is amazing.

With only shed money to spend there isn't a lot around, I like Japanese stuff and would quite like an Previa, Estima, Stream or something like that. PETROL!

I would love a Range Rover, there are thousands of them on sale very cheap, but there is no way I would pay £570 VED (or £330)

The used car market seems absolutely crazy at the moment, I've got up to five grand burning a hole in my pocket and nobody wants my money!!!
