Hi there. I bought a car that was showing the MOT for it had been done in May last month. As the deal was going through I realised the dealer had private plates on the car. I asked for the original plates to be added on. He was happy to do this. When I input the original reg on the DVLA page it doesn't show the car as having any MOT.

Is this correct and I need to get the car MOT'd? Or can anything be done as it had been previously MOT'd last month but just under a different plate?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Apologies also, I'm not the most clued up when it comes to these kind of things. Thanks.

The MOT status will remain and be updated with the new reg plate. It can take a few days for the DVLA systems to sync with each other though. If you use this link it should show you the correct status though.

Ah ok, thanks for your reply. I tried with the link you provided and it said no record found and when I input the private plate that was on the car before it could not find the reg at all. Bit worried but I guess worst case scenario I just MOT the car myself?

The change of plate will have no impact on the MOT status of the car as the MOT system is referenced to the VIN. As said, the system takes time to update.

You should be able to trace the MOT by the reference number on the V5 document. If you are sure it has an MOT, just relax and wait for the update. Did you or the seller send the registration document off with the new plate/change of owner?
