When our second was born we had a metro and an AX. Not sure why you'd NEED anything bigger.
Nobody needs anything bigger than a metro with just one child agreed, but why put up with such massive compromise when you could get something that fits into your lifestyle? Good luck getting a kayak, mountain bikes, a dog and baby seat in a metro whilst towing a caravan though.
I don't know why but there is a phenomenon on PH where a number of contributors try to convince people that you don't need a big car for the kids. "When I were a lad..." style posts. I can only assume that these people either haven't had children or are a long time out of the game of travelling with infants.

It's actually bizarre. Of course a big car is more suitable for a family. To buy a bigger car with a baby on the way is a perfectly logical and sensible thing to do. Family cars on the whole don't need to be much more expensive than small cars. I do not understand why PH contributors wouldn't want you to have a spacious car for your family.

Have people seen the child seat legal requirements? Have they seen what a pushchair looks like these days?

I HATE SUVs, so I could understand that, but that's not what we're talking about.

We’ve already spaffed 4 figures, Mrs wanted this Egg travel system £1500 because it matches the colour in the nursery, go figure! .
I hear you! hehe

Not gonna lie, I had no problem with my wife choosing everything to do with our kid, apart from the buggy. I even used to sneak into John Lewis on my own on the QT to, ahem, ‘test drive’ all the various models! Probably spent more time running the rule over them than my last couple of car purchases! eek

But you have to answer in the context of the question. Does the OP need to rush and buy something now, with todays inflated prices, because it's mandatory to have a large car with a newborn? IMO no it isn't, and others are posting similar views, but that doesn't mean it isn't a smart move to buy something bigger when finances / the market allows.

It's entirely possible to comfortably get a newborn around in a modern hatchback. It's a lot easier in a bigger car, but does that mean you spend over the odds to accelerate that move? IMO, no.

Yep, hence

If you buy a car now you are paying a premium. It's up to you whether that is prohibitive to you.

I personally don't think values are going to drop in time for you.

If I were the OP I'd consider if I would be holidaying in the UK with the baby. I brought this up in my post because it's astonishing how much you need to take with you that you just don't think about. If the OP isn't going to be doing that then there is no rush at all as most cars can do the job.

My GF has a Picanto and that fits a pram, child seat and a couple of bags in with no problems.

That's why I bought a roofbox instead (a Farrand aero box) off eBay for £100 - the pram and other baby crap goes in that if we travel in the UK.

Frees up alot of space in the car, and cheaper than getting a new, unknown to you "possibly a lemon" of a car when your current car works fine smile that's how we sorted the size issue out (BMW E91 btw is more a compact car than a load lugger)

Many years ago when my youngest was 6mo I considered a 3-series estate when upgrading from a Mk2 Mondeo Estate and concluded that the 3-series estate was just too small... Since then have got a dog and while the amount of stuff we take for the children has dropped the loss of ~1/3 of boot space means we've now got a top box as well!

Same for me with my Avant, although I put the suitcases and stuff like that in the roof box and the stuff which I may need to access on the journey goes in the boot. Makes a huge difference having the roof box.
