I keep seeing these cheap, and the Granturismo and whatever the convertible is called, and they're very tempting until you investigate where you can buy ordinary consumables like suspension arms and brake parts and see nobody lists them, or they're hugely expensive.

Even if they don't break and are as reliable as a Lexus eventually you're going to need a part of some description and it appears as if most of them are dealer only and/or megamoney.

You're tasked with delivering a package 2,000 miles across Europe. It needs to be delivered asap so it's a lot of hours behind the wheel.

The package is about the size of a guitar case.

You have £10,000 to spend on a car to carry out the task.

Your petrol can be claimed back from the company so MPG is not an issue.

Which car do you take?
I'll go in my car and keep the £10k.

It's definitely a car you'd want to buy a cheap but fully functioning example, take it on some adventures and sell it cheap, hoping to not spend too much on the way. Long term Maserati ownership is for lunatics and millionaires.

So close... I was hoping to find an LS600 long wheelbase with enough left over to pay someone else to drive whilst I lounged in the back... The only ones I can find with sufficient change left are ropey AF or SWB.

Ah well, maybe I can at least have a nap before heading back!

Having been chauffeured in the back of my LS460 (all UK models are SWB unfortunately) I can imagine it would be a pleasant way to travel.

I had a go of an LS600 the other day, what an utterly fabulous car. I think you'd have to really be soft in the head or susceptible to the nonsense in the motoring press to have bought a W221 S500 instead of an LS460 based on the obvious chasm in quality and materials between it and the LS, particulary in the horrid vinyl seats/dash and minimum equipment level most S Classes come in.

I was completely smitten, the only reason I'd contemplate an S Class in preference was to get a twin turbo V12 of some sort because the LS was not a fast car, but as a proper Jabba the Hutt conveyance it was peerless.

Think the one I looked at was a 90k mile 2008 car and got £7.5k trade.

I think you know how I feel about my LS460 but there are definitely some reasons I'd prefer an S over an LS.

We did a hugely enjoyable month long European road trip last year in a BMW 730d, would've been even better in a 750Li V8:

We did likewise but in our Century. Lovely. You can't beat a big comfy old barge for such things, even better than the traditional GT (Grand Tourer, usually a Coupe, the original and proper meaning) imo as there's ample boot space and additional room in the cabin.

v12 bi-turbo s-class is the obvious choice: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202205256...

My lexus spoilt all other barges for me and I'll not have another barge until I can afford another Lexus

Definitely seems like a good one is probably all the barge you really need. As Ross has said though, perhaps just too boring/competent to ever bond with?

Ref your spot at £7.5k, GoL - that seems incredibly cheap as they all seem double that most of the time unless a true high-mile airport shuttle.

They've taken a real kicking at trade the last 6 months.

An S Class is just as boring and arguably not as competent, certainly my experience of running a £100k+ 10 year old Mercedes flagship cars rather suggests they are flimsy and disposable compared to the Lexus experience of Ross and others on thread.

This whole "Japanese cars are boring" thing is largely a construct of motoring journalists I think, going right back to claiming a Sierra was a better car than a Carina E because the Sierra was so much more scintilating, and probably before then. Nothing to do with the Ford marketing budget and jollies vs Toyota/Honda/Mazda/Nissan then guys?

The Lexus wasn't even remotely sporty but if you want lively and engaging dynamics from a barge you would be looking at a Quattroporte, Panamera, or an XJ because none of the other contenders are significantly more dynamic, even the last couple of generations of 7 series have given up any sorts of "sports barge" heritage to just be a Happy Shopper S Class.

Over the last few years I've found myself really challenging my own perceptions of Japanese cars after realising they'd almost all been formed by reading the opinions of others, often not very reliable others, rather than personal experience. I've since found that these 2nd and 3rd hand opinions were almost all complete bks.

That may well be true, but likewise I much preferred driving my E65 to my LS460. It was a far better steer.

I can't reply to Deadtom directly due to the change of volume.
Thanks Deadltom for your reply about a barge and insurance for a 17 year old.
The Jag has already gone down well, a Volvo might be a hard sell but the Touring Car link might just do it!
He's got his test next month so hopefully we can make some progress after then - I'll update if it goes anywhere.
Any more suggestions gratefully received.
