They've taken a real kicking at trade the last 6 months.
An S Class is just as boring and arguably not as competent, certainly my experience of running a £100k+ 10 year old Mercedes flagship cars rather suggests they are flimsy and disposable compared to the Lexus experience of Ross and others on thread.
This whole "Japanese cars are boring" thing is largely a construct of motoring journalists I think, going right back to claiming a Sierra was a better car than a Carina E because the Sierra was so much more scintilating, and probably before then. Nothing to do with the Ford marketing budget and jollies vs Toyota/Honda/Mazda/Nissan then guys?
The Lexus wasn't even remotely sporty but if you want lively and engaging dynamics from a barge you would be looking at a Quattroporte, Panamera, or an XJ because none of the other contenders are significantly more dynamic, even the last couple of generations of 7 series have given up any sorts of "sports barge" heritage to just be a Happy Shopper S Class.
Over the last few years I've found myself really challenging my own perceptions of Japanese cars after realising they'd almost all been formed by reading the opinions of others, often not very reliable others, rather than personal experience. I've since found that these 2nd and 3rd hand opinions were almost all complete bks.
That may well be true, but likewise I much preferred driving my E65 to my LS460. It was a far better steer. My mum has had the same Nissan Almera for about 10 years and it cost £450 off gumtree, it never gives up.

You're tasked with delivering a package 2,000 miles across Europe. It needs to be delivered asap so it's a lot of hours behind the wheel.
The package is about the size of a guitar case.
You have £10,000 to spend on a car to carry out the task.
Your petrol can be claimed back from the company so MPG is not an issue.
Which car do you take?
£200 to DHL, this and £800 for the chains. So overpriced, but whatever, I've got ten large for free in a 1-5 barge thread so everyone is a winner. The package is about the size of a guitar case.

Best LS400 I could find....or an SC430....guitar case could go on passenger seat. Honorable mention for best citroen cx, or xm I could find or a potentially ropey series 3 xj6....The package is about the size of a guitar case.

Goodness Ross, I hope we're not kicking this vol off with a discussion about rules! The first non-mod post was an ask to spend £10k in a thread with a title maxxing at half that, I mean I think CdG started a 5-10 thread in about 2019, but like anyone has seen it since!

I think the earliest Carina Es were 1992/3. The Mondeo came out in 1993? I can see how from a driver's perspective the Mondeo may have been a better steer and had a better ride/handling compromise.
I don't know if one of the reasons Ford did such a good job on the Mondeo was the Nissan Primera and Peugeot 405?
You could be correct about it being a lazy, path of least resistance point made by people with column inches to fill, crusts to earn and advertisers to keep happy.

I have reminded Mrs D that I will soon need a day to clean the winter walks out of the floor of the Lexus, along with wiping the mud off Mini D's seat where her muddy wellies have deposited their findings. It will come up like new. Probably. I hope.
I have a theory... for those who prefer a black interior, did you spend your Friday nights quaffing snakebite and black, whilst swaying to Type O Negative and The Cure?

I love light interiors. What I don't like are horrific two-tone combinations like that. If you saw someone pairing two items of clothing in those colours you'd assume they were blind. Black is boring, but at least it doesn't make me feel nauseous.
Fair enough, I fixated on the lightness.I still don't think it's bad, I'd still take it over bleck.

Yeah, that thread gained no traction whatsoever. Always seemed odd to me as most buys for most of us seemed to be in that bracket, but it's nice to have a single focus for saddos I guess.
