Discussion
Tesla have heavily subsidised the Y in recent months. You could get a 3 year PCH deal for circa £17k over 3 years, which values the car (assuming LR) at like £35k after 3 years. There’s zero chance the car would be worth that much, given how savage depreciation is on them generally, and how saturated the market is.
As long as Tesla carry on doing that it should still sell well. Not a great business strategy though it seems? But then again TSLA stock has been disconnected from reality for some time.
What I find odd about the new Y design is how different it looks. It looks nothing like the refreshed 3 which only came out less than a year ago. And to add a single stalk back, after people suffered the removal of them and did mental gymnastics to justify why it was a genius move. Just bizarre, really. There’s no design language through line between the models on sale.

I’ll answer the question a different way
Why is the MY better than say an iD7?
The id7 has better range, isn’t more expensive, has plenty of cabin space, but is a little behind on tech in some eyes, not in others
Why is it better the Q4?
The q4 is more compact, has a bigger battery and better range, more refinement and similar priced
Why is it better than BMW iX3? The BMW is a much better cabin, quieter and more refined and I’d argue the driving tech is better.
Why is it better than a Kia EV9? The Kia has more space, seats that rotate, genuine 7 seat, great range etc
I could go on
A comparable spec id7 is 10k more. Why is the MY better than say an iD7?

You know, I have to say that you've seemed a reasonable chap over the years, but you're way out over your skis on this one. You're literally proving his point with every attempt to counter it.
It's not an accident that the Model Y is by far the best-selling EV in the world.

If you just want a big lump of an EV, grab the £350 a month run out current models. They won't be that cheap for a couple of years with the new model.
The lump is the problem - this time they have got the styling right! I think looking at £500 plus with the model for AWD?Familymad said:

I very much doubt that to be honest. I think there will be similar deals within 6 months of launch, if not sooner. Tesla are chasing sales above all else, and if people can't afford to buy the cars they will just look elsewhere.I think the Highland came down about 6 months after launch. It was around £500 for the RWD SR and now is £299, with the RWD LR (not available at launch) now £349.
We have a RWD SR Y sat outside at the moment on lease as a 'will it work for us' 2 year test and the answer is a resounding yes even with the 180-250 or so range. That goes back in March 2026, and as it's a little bigger than we need will likely change to a M3 RWD LR.

I have just bought a secondhand M3 SR+ (LFP battery) and think it is great for our use. I am now looking to change my other ICE car into a Model Y, as we need a proper boot for the dog. Top of the list is the LR RWD which appears to be great value from Tesla, better so than a 2022 used model on 3rd party finance, something that is important to me as my first foray into EVs, I want some protection against depreciation and also with finance attached, if something (unlikely) goes wrong then I have the finance company on side to support.
I do like the look of the latest MY so at the moment am unsure whether to wait it out. The main driver is a good deal so I am currently thinking to just pull the trigger on the outgoing MY RWD LR, as it seems heavily subsidised by Tesla so a pretty good deal and likely to be well supported on the tech front for years to come. Also like having proper stalks for indicators.

Lease prices are healthy
Ev6 another one I’ve not mentioned
Polestar 4 another and walks all over the range of a Tesla range
Skoda Enyaq. Good looking car compared to the Telsa jellymould too
You’re failing to acknowledge that there are many many compelling cars, just because the combination the MY offers you is what you want doesn’t mean one of the others doesn’t fit someone else.

It’s like people always bought a hoover or an IBM computer because they thought they were making the safe choice.
My point is simple, there are many many criteria people use and to say the Model Y is the best is not true. It might be the best combination without being the best at any one of those is fair enough. But not everybody want the trashy suspension over rough ground, or the software gremlins in just about everything from Spotify being clunky at the moment, phantom braking, dodgy wipers, voice control that turned the front and not rear fog lights on, the list goes on.. yet people “think” it has the best tech when it doesn’t do half the things other cars can do like have a choice of regen, head up displays, augmented reality sat nav, etc etc.
Work out what’s important to you (whoever you are) and if Tesla scores the best on that combo then go for it. But don’t blindly take “the best” as a given which is what I responded to. The best tech.. erm.. not a chance outside the US.

Trying to parse the discussion to suit your views doesn't work when we can all read what was actually written, which was: It’s like people always bought a hoover or an IBM computer because they thought they were making the safe choice.

"The Y is popular because it’s the “best” ev. No other car has the range, tech, size and cheap. Anything that is directly comparable is 20k more, doesn’t have the tech as standard or doesn’t have the range."
That is a factually true statement, and nothing you've written since then changes that.
Other EVs may be better in individual aspects, but none offers the overall package, which neatly explains the Model Y's worldwide commercial success.
You quoting those exact individual aspects and ignoring the larger point only serves to reinforce the larger point, ironically.

New Model Y has kept the stalk for indicator.
I thought: that's a win!And then I thought just how sad it is if I consider that a win.
Seriously, the capacitive indicator buttons are beyond stupid.
I like both the new and old, I think I'll probably go for the outgoing model as doubt the deals will be as good on the new car in the short term.

That's great! I couldn't see how the buttons would work, say, when exiting the third exit on a roundabout. To be fair, most other scenarios seem to work, as the steering angle is usually straight when applying.

Definitely a US thing, loads of roads are in grids, traffic lights everywhere, hardly any roundabouts. You’d signal with the wheel straight, turn and then carry on with the indicators hopefully auto-cancelling. I wouldn’t mind stalkless over there. Stalkless is stupid in the UK, given the proliferation of roundabouts and the relatively bendy roads we have here.
